BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma - Noel Vermillion 1/7 Review (Vertex)

katsudonkatsudon Il y a 3 ansReview
Hey everyone- I'm back to do yet another review, in what will hopefully be the first of many in 2014. This time around, we're going to look at one of my most anticipated figures of 2013, the Chrono Phantasma 1/7 Noel Vermillion by Vertex.

BlazBlue has been around for quite some time now, as the so-called 'spiritual successor' of Guilty Gear. But for those who don't know who she is, Noel is the female protagonist of the series. While at first glance she appears to be merely a clumsy girl who cries easily, in truth she suffers from amnesia and is Voir le spoilerCacher le spoiler actually Mu-12, whose one purpose is to erase the world from existence.

Before I start, just a fair note of warning: this review is a tad lengthy. With that out of the way, let's begin!

Boxing
As far as boxes go, this one isn't anything particularly special, as it doesn't jump out at you in any way. It's not flashy, but the colors work for it and it gets the job done- nothing else to really say here.

Base
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/katsudon1389486293.jpeg
While a base is by all means considered successful as long as it does an admirable job of holding a figure in place nicely, I don't think one would be asking for too much if they wanted a base to have little bit more character. It seems my prayers were answered, as the base that Vertex made for Noel is pretty great.

The blue on it really compliments the figure well, it's a good size, and it has cool looking art that resembles the 'emblem' behind the characters in the character select screen of the games. Each member of the cast has their own unique one, and you see it behind them when they perform their distortions and astrals as well. (for the ones not in the know, those are the terms used to describe the supers and instant kills)

So we've established that the base looks good, but does it support the figure well? It does, but getting her to fit snugly onto it might require a bit of force, as it's not the most cooperative of bases. Instead of just pegs on her feet, there's a peg and a 'bar' that you have to slide into it, so it takes a bit more time than most. Once there though, you'll never have to worry about it again.

Accessories
Noel comes with three accessories: a coat/cape that you can display her with or without, 'ribbons' that attach to said coat, and a holster for her Nox Nyctores revolver Arcus Diabolus: Bolverk.

Without her coat/cape:
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/katsudon1389486339.jpeg
Seems a little lacking doesn't it? Of course, if you're a fan of figures in which girls are wearing super skin-tight clothing and wish to see it in all its glory, you'll probably want to display her without it.

With coat/cape:
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/katsudon1389486417.jpeg
Personally, I think this looks way better!

Coat/Cape and Ribbons:

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/katsudon1389486299.jpeg
The paint job on the coat wasn't as good as it should have been, as the shade of blue that's on it isn't the right one. It should be a tad bit brighter, but instead it turned out darker and has bit of a purplish hue.

The ribbons came out better, but sliding them onto the coat is a little tricky as the slot that they're supposed to be in is a rather small and tight fit. You'll have to push it a little as well, as they'll fall off easily if you don't.

Holster:
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/katsudon1389486297.jpeg
The holster holding her guns look amazing, the detail on them on great and the colors look right also. Main gripe with it is that like the rest of the figure, attaching holster to her is something you have to be super careful with, as you have to detach her body, attach holster to her skirt, reattach her body carefully ease her hand onto the grip of the gun and make sure it fits snugly. Vertex could have made the entire process a lot less difficult if they decided to break the holster into two pieces and have the revolver inside of it as a separate accessory instead. But this is how the end result turned out, so no point in lamenting on what could have been.

Sculpt
For the things that Vertex got right with Noel, there are quite a few things that they could have done a lot better. Let's address the main 'complaint' with her, shall we?
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/katsudon1389486341.jpeg
When the first images of Noel were released, everyone were up in arms about how her nipples were showing through her shirt. Now, they aren't quite as visible as they could be, but regardless, they shouldn't have been there in the first place. The figure is based off her character splash art from Chrono Phantasma, and while you can definitely see that Noel is indeed wearing a more revealing and tight fitting outfit, it is NOT see through.

Arc System Works clearly wanted to give Noel a more mature look for the game, as in her previous appearances she looks a lot more childish.(granted, this is before all this awful stuff happens to her throughout the course of the games) So her new outfit represents both her personal growth and changing of allegiances. It's a good look all things considered, as she goes from being moe to having a more refined and sexier appearance. Personally, I love her new look and I don't think making her shirt see through and even more skintight was necessary in the slightest- as it's blatant oversexualization at this point. (Don't let it get in the way of you enjoying the figure though)

Thankfully, it's not too distracting and the sculpt overall came out quite good- Vertex captures the character splash art that they were trying to emulate well, but if I had a real complaint about it, it's probably with her foot that's attached to the base: it's curved at a rather weird angle. Not sure why it turned out this way, as while in the art her feet are curved somewhat, it's not to this extent.

Painting
Okay, I'm not too familiar with Vertex but if their Noel is any indication, they are not too good at quality control. When I took her out of the box, first thing I noticed was that there were black blotches on her back and arm. So before I did anything else, I had to use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to remove them.

As mentioned previously, the blue on her coat is darker than it should be and has a purple hue- and this mishap translates to the rest of the figure, her skirt and belt are quite intricately detailed, but the yellow part of it has splashes of black blended into it, which is definitely a painting defect on their part- as it shouldn't look like that. But luckily, it's one of those things that isn't too noticeable until you look really closely at it.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/katsudon1389486343.jpeg
Her hair came out well though, and even though it's more orange than blonde for the most part, it's not something that people would readily complain about, as the difference isn't that apparent.

If there's one thing that Vertex did completely right though, it has to be her face:
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/katsudon1389486425.jpeg
Her eyes are amazingly well detailed, and I love the expression on her face, as she gives off this awesome look of 'cool indifference'. (This might just be me, but I love women that look like they just don't care, as I find it very attractive.)

Which is why I find it somewhat funny that her weapons turned out more white than silver somehow. The detail on Bolverk is good, so I'm a little confused as to why the coloring of it is off. But when you factor in that a good bit of the figure doesn't have the right colors, I guess I can't be too surprised. (Not a painting issue, but the one I own the revolver that she's holding is crooked. It's straight from about halfway through, but as you get to the barrel, it curves off for whatever reason)

Pose
I thought the splash art of her for Chrono Phantasma looks really good, so I'm happy with the pose- even though it seems like she's floating in midair, as no one can possibly stand in that position... But that aside, the pose is fantastic- as she gives off this air of cool indifference and also manages to look like a badass in the process.

Final Thoughts
As stated previously, this was one of my most anticipated figures of 2013, so I had high hopes for her, even though I knew that Vertex isn't the best figure making company around. Am I disappointed? To an extent, as I feel that she could have turned out a lot better. Or at least a lot of the minor issues could have been fixed if the people in charge of quality control just did a better job.

With a good amount of painting defects and the fact that you had to do some cleaning right out of the box... Can't exactly call it a promising start. However, Noel as a whole looks great and if you can get over the minor issues there's a lot to love here. Don't let the fact that Vertex decided to oversexualize her turn you away from getting her if you're interested, as it's not as big of a deal as people are/were making it out to be.

I know this review was definitely a tad on the wordy side, but there was just a lot to say about her as a whole- so thanks for sticking it out and reading it until the end!

victorviper (Il y a 3 ans) #1930672Nice review. I've just casually played BlazBlue, but this figure caught my eye anyway when it was announced. After all, I do like cute, weapon-toting figures. Based on your photos, it sure does look like her hair is much oranger than in the official photos. She's still in stock at AmiAmi, so maybe if she gets discounted or shows up preowned, I might have to pick her up!
BlazBlue is a pretty hard game to play seriously man, the combos are insanely lengthy and your execution has to be flawless... (I played it a lot in college, but there wasn't much of a scene for it sadly) I can't see her becoming a sought after figure anytime soon, so getting her for a discounted price soon definitely seems quite plausible!

AnimeGuruma (Il y a 3 ans) #1930800Looks nice, but is her left leg okay?
It looks wonky as hell I know, but it's fine- as I said in the review, once you get her onto the base, she's incredibly stable and you'll have nothing to worry about.

gamergibbons (Il y a 3 ans) #1930801What an amazing review! If it wasn't for the skin-tight top I would totally get this figure. Reason being is I'd have a lot of explaining to do with my parents, granted they still think it "Chinese cartoons". Well on the Brightside, I can display the GITS 2.0 manga on my shelf and nobody ever questions it xD
Thanks! And hey, if you want to get her and NOT get questioned by your parents, you can always get some figures of the revealing attire variety and slowly ease into this one... =P (also, GITS is awesome, if anyone questions it, that's because they don't know what they're talking about)

beanbeany (Il y a 3 ans) #1930807The paint job on mine isn't nearly as sloppy as yours. That sucks :\
Yeah, it seems that some people were more fortunate than I was! Vertex's quality control is apparently hit or miss, it seems... Oh well.

Superstickman (Il y a 3 ans) #1930876Thank you for a immensely insightful review. I was really interested to see how this figure would turn out as Noel is one my favourite BB characters. I think I may get her at some point when she's a bit cheaper and/or my wallet isn't suffering so much.
You're very welcome man, and how can you not love Noel? She's a great character, not to mention being super adorable to boot. =3 She'll probably pop up on Mandarake one of these days for a bit less or hit bargain bin, so waiting is a good call on your part. (get a great figure AND save money in the process? That's a win right there)

Kromert (Il y a 3 ans) #1930976This is a great review from a great game. Super informative and not at all too wordy. Definitely makes me consider pickin one of these up eventually. The figure I really want from BB is Makoto (okay, so maybe it's the ears, lol) but your review is definitely making me consider a change of heart, lol. (Plus Makoto can be a little on the pricey side, lol)
Haha, thanks dude. Didn't know you were a fan of the games! Definitely consider getting her in the future if the opportunity presents itself. I love the Makoto figure, but you're right, she's not cheap at all- I got mine sealed on Jungle for 12000 yen, I think? But if you want a figure that'll have your friends facepalming, questioning your sanity, or declaring 'I can see her boobs!' that's the one to get!

I ended up not getting her because the delays from my December Haul were really scaring me and I had to play it safe & save up. Maybe sometime later I'll pick her up.

Thanks dude! And yeah, that makes sense- my December was a lot better than I expected due to four of the figures getting delayed so I was able to dodge a bullet there... And waiting is probably good, as I wouldn't be too surprised if she hits the bargain bin in the future.
