PM Q Ayanami Rei

MoroMoroIl y a 3 ansReview
Today I’m going to show you a really nice SEGA PM Figure from Rebuild of Evangelion 3.33/Q, of Ayanami Rei in her sleek black plugsuit. I think she turned out beautifully and wanted to draw more attention to her, especially since right now there are only a few Q Reis that have been made. Prize figures rarely get the kind of attention that scales do in any case (unless they’re Sonico figures, I’ve noticed, since there seem to be a ton of those that turned out well.)

I'm a big fan of SEGA PMs, or at least the ones for Eva, and I have 5 others with 2 more on preorder. I own shirtless Kaworu (ITEM #107641), Q plugsuit Kaworu/Shinji (ITEM #157807 + ITEM #157799), EVA-09 (ITEM #199830, and reviewed here if you're interested blog/16767), and EVA-13 (ITEM #157800). I've ordered another PM Kaworu/Shinji set (ITEM #236267 + ITEM #236263) and I'll probably get more in the future, or at least try to given the forthcoming supply problems. I'm pleased with all of the ones I have, but I'd say this Rei is the best of the lot.
I didn't take any box pictures but her box is a standard SEGA PM style, though unlike many of them it actually has a window. It's nothing special. On to the figure!

Her pose is understated, just a slight curve of her spine as she holds the massive scythe. You can see that even at an angle it’s still longer than she is tall. It’s thin and could snap if you aren’t careful with it, but isn’t nearly as fragile-feeling as the one that comes with the EVA-Mark.09 Revoltech, which I fear breaking every time I handle.

The scythe blade is detailed with a little bit of a shiny finish.
It comes in two pieces, the lower end being separate to allow safer placement. It attaches with a little peg which slots into her hand, though the fit is a little loose on mine and I had to really press it in there to make sure it stayed. This probably varies a bit between figures.

The scythe cuts a strong silhouette and leads the eye over her gentle curves and long, shapely legs.
Rei’s base is annoyingly big considering that the scythe blade doesn’t actually touch it, but maybe that varies between figures. While Rei isn’t screwed into the base, unfortunately the holes are in the base and the pegs are on her feet, which completely precludes displaying her without the large base. Because of her one foot being off the ground, she might not be able to stand unassisted anyway...

Like all SEGA PM figures she has no official scale, but she looks close to 1/7. Here next to this Ichiban Kuji prize Kaworu, who also has no given scale but appears to match her pretty closely.

And next to Kotobukiya’s 1/7 Mari, who looks a little bigger than Rei, but Kotobukiya scales tend to be on the larger side. They're close enough that you can probably display them together and it won't look odd.
As a note, she’s also the same “scale” as the shirtless PM Kaworu, but doesn’t quite fit with the PM Q-plugsuit Kaworu/Shinji set. (Annoyingly, those two manage to match each other but NOTHING ELSE.)

The paintwork is top-notch for a prize figure and I couldn’t find much fault with her. She isn’t flawless, no prize figure will be, but there’s nothing wrong with her that bothers me at all.

Her face looks soft and pretty, sort of lost in thought. Considering her psychological state in Q, this is very fitting.

Thus far, I think this is the best Q Rei you can get for your money, even though it’s just a prize figure. She's a relatively recent release and shouldn't give you much trouble to get a hold of. I am sure Kotobukiya or maybe Alter will put out a Q Rei scale in the future, and it’s pretty likely I’ll get it at that time, but I’m pleased with this one. If you’re looking for the right Q Rei, right now, and don’t want to spring for the pricey RAH, look no further than this one.

Thanks for reading :>

Moro (Il y a 2 ans) #3595947I doubt she would stand without a base (the scythe affects her balance too, and she is mostly on one foot) but I don't expect it would be that hard to try and make a smaller base for her if you were so inclined.

I see what you mean after I checked out the original resin kit it's based on. A wooden base might work equally well. Thanks for the reply.

Steinvas1055 (Il y a 2 ans) #3583744I like the figure but the size of the base is keeping me from buying it. Does anyone think the figure would be able to stand on its own if I removed the peg from the feet?

Moro (Il y a 2 ans) #2591619Ah, I'm a perv, so I like sexual things of my favorite characters (and it's fiction anyway so), but they have to feel in-character somehow. They have to pull off what feels like the correct look for if that character was in a sexual situation. If there were some ecchi figures of any of the Eva girls that "felt right" I would definitely have them, but I am picky also. I mostly satisfy my desire for ecchi Eva stuff with doujinshi, I have a pretty big collection.
Those Creators' Labo figures are pretty but they don't feel at all like Asuka or Rei to me, even as older versions. Though I suppose the Asuka isn't too far off from Evangelion Anima Asuka.

I totally understand what you mean, it is fiction and people are entitled to their own opinions and preferences. I suppose to me aswell I kind of view Rei as asexual so it would just seem really OOC to me lol whereas i'd be more open to a slightly ecchi one of asuka. But again, i'd be really picky about it haha
Yeah while I quite like their rei I'm not fussed on the asuka at all, her body proportions seem really off to me

BatFruits (Il y a 2 ans) #2590281I had a look at your review :) and yep I totally agree, I don't really like OOC figures. Alternate versions and costumes are fine by me, I just don't go for OOC poses and facial expressions. I know what you mean about Asuka, I generally don't like seeing sexualised figures of the eva girls cause they're 14 canonically so it doesn't sit right with me. I make exceptions for figures that are made to look like an older version of the character like this Rei ITEM #242

Moro (Il y a 2 ans) #2590111I actually did a review of that Rei here if you're interested blog/16026
You'd think that a mostly "blank" expression would be easy to get right, but it turns out it's way too easy to get a drugged/high look instead. Or just a way OOC smile. A soft, gentle smile is a must for Rei, or else none at all, lol.
I also find Asuka to be frequently misrepresented but for a different reason. As you say, she's more open in expressing her emotions, but I don't like the figures where she has the kind of smile like she's going "hey big boy..." at the figure owner XD It feels OOC. I actually don't own any smiling Asukas come to think of it. Just worked out that way.

BatFruits (Il y a 2 ans) #2590089It is gorgeous, I would love to own one some day! I think she is a really hard character to capture, Asuka is very over the top in exoressing her emotions in the series so I'm happy to see smiling, happy figures of her, Rei is a lot more subtle though so I can see why its tricky

Moro (Il y a 2 ans) #2589943Yeah I see what you mean. That one is 100% classic NGE Rei. That's what I love about it. My complaint is that Rei figures often make her look vapid or drugged, or uncharacteristically happy (a smile from Rei is rare, after all.)

BatFruits (Il y a 2 ans) #2589937I agree that figure has a really good Rei face, I think I'm so picky as I'm biased towards her design in the original rather than the Rebuild, and most figures portray her more as she is in rebuild. But now I'm just being nitpicky!

Moro (Il y a 2 ans) #2586806It really is strange that with so many Reis, so few of them truly have her face right. I think top honors goes to this figure for the perfect Rei face: ITEM #945
