When Grails become available

Isn't it frustrating (annoying really) when one of your grails come up for sale and you just don't have the cash to buy it. Of course it's not the sellers fault, they don't know you have no money at the moment to buy it. So what is it that you as collectors do?

Just this morning I looked at my e-mails as I do every morning to see what FiginStock pulled for me while I was sleeping. In Two days it pulled two of my grails the first one Yesterday was Eris from Asobi ni Ikuyo!

It showed up well in advance of me getting up 3:22 Am. So you can imagine when I clicked the link after reading Asobi ni IKuYo! in Japanese.. I was happy to see that an item was listed in my e-mail; even better was the fact that I knew I did not have the Bikini version and I wanted it bad.

SOLD OUT

Well like I thought I had a chance to get that figurine... This is my second time seeing her for sale. The first time I had actually purchased her from an MFC seller who in turned refunded me after instead of sending me the figurine. And this one being sold out simply meant I could do nothing about it.

Now this morning was a different story. I have had Onegai Teacher - Kazami Mizuho on my wish list now for about 3-4 years now.

This morning there she was at a decent resale price. But as I am only on a 6 month contract and I have no clue if I will be re-hired again I have to make the tuff choices in life and say...

Do I really need her in my collection?

Will she come up for sale at another time?

Do you want to risk not having money for bills in the future?

Of course being a responsible adult I say let her go again. Had to do the same thing a little over 3 years ago when I found her at 15280 Yen on Ami Ami. So my question to you for those that took the time to read this blog is this:

"What would yo do if one of your grails came up for sale but you have circumstances that just won't ( or should not ) permit you to buy it?"

The poll I know A and c are the same I just wish I could thing like that.

Thank you for reading, I look forward to comments below.

No money = no grail for me.

Mind you, if it was something I wanted more than anything else (like say, F4F announced a SCIV Siegfried) I would MAKE money happen. Beg more hours from different depts, sell stuff, mow lawns, whatever. But otherwise I'm never going to put my bills or living in jeopardy for a figure/collectible. Even if sometimes it's tempting haha.

Anyone has item #19098 for sale, I've been looking for her since 2009?
Assuming it has been exactly 8 years, 2922 days (2 leap years), then 0 < p < 0.00003422. I'm prepared to pay just about anything for her but I never saw her for sale; I'm assuming p ≠ 0 since she exist. I actively looked for her a few years ago but I now just have her as passive search. I even sent PMs to the 5 person having her in MFC about 6 years ago, none wanted to get rid of her. No one since then joined MFC indicating they owned her.
I do have patience.

Well, since the waiting time X follows a geometric distribution, the kicker is that the standard deviation of X is (1-p)^.5/p, which approaches 1/p as p -> 0. Thus, even a waiting time of 3/p wouldn't even really be an outlier. For example, for a not impossibly rare figure (probability 1/1000 of it showing up on any given day), 50 simulated waiting times could be:

Rweb:> rgeom(50, prob=.001)
[1] 38 3619 523 2436 3482 969 852 442 1698 256 339 1498 335 4858 2604
[16] 327 569 18 863 1714 919 1221 2185 1690 87 87 577 3040 881 387
[31] 1040 1647 143 1435 543 627 643 370 589 972 1109 386 1057 474 776
[46] 2053 80 711 476 270

One lucky collector in our simulation waits only 18 days to find their grail and one poor bastard waits for more than 13 years! The geometric distribution is a real b**** sometimes :).

victorviper (Il y a 8 jours) #20004339...if a figure will be available for purchase on any given day with probability p not equal to zero, then with probability 1 it will eventually be available again in the future and in fact the expected waiting time for the figure is 1/p days...
Patience is a virtue after all.

My one grail was item #163750. When I saw him posted up here for such a decent price I was hesitant but also knew if this was real I needed to act. I don't encourage this and I only say do it if you know you have a consistent income. I charged it. I usual would never charge figures and only go off my debit card. But I saw it as a one time opportunity. So I did it. I don't regret it. I recommend if you do this to pay the shit off ASAP. In the end it does go off the rule everyone else is saying: you don't have the money you don't get it. Paying off bills requires cash as well in the end.

If I'm cash-strapped I'll have to let it go. Nothing I can do about it. I did, however, asked to pay by installments once with a MFC seller who very kindly agreed.
I won't even go looking at expensive grails when I don't have any money, that saves a lot of heartache haha.
However I did have a few prize-figure grails that I can instantly pay for (price is super cheap, they just aren't popular to be readily available) which I'll just buy in a heartbeat :)

I don't have grails but I might give in if I found a figure I want at a veeery good price like, say, about twice cheaper than it normally goes for and such discount is a rare occasion. Though these days I mostly notice figures I was hunting a few years ago but couldn't find or afford and now they pop up for quite cheap and I already don't want them.

I make it a point not to look for grails unless I'm able to afford them at that time for that exact reason. It saves me a lot of disappointments. I look them up every once in a while to see where their prices are at, to give me a good idea of what to expect, and when I have the money, then I start looking for them. I don't want to jeopardise my finances because of figures.

In my country usually the sellers or proxies allow for down payment and you can pay the rest later and they'll send the item after you have paid in full so i usually pay partially.

Grails and other high-priority items ALWAYS seem to pop up when I'm broke. Then when I actually have money to spend, there's absolutely nothing I want since I want to make the purchase worthwhile... -_-

There have been times where the sale is just TOO good to pass up. Like I found item #364097 on sale for UNDER 3K last Christmas. His current market price is anywhere between 6-9k... so yeah. That was a complete steal. I didn't have the money, even though he was incredibly cheap, but I made it work somehow.

I had this experience recently. I found the first release of item #5813. But I already had some important purchases to deal with among an expensive statue I had to make a deposit on. I had to pass on it. It still haunts me to this day. </3
