Today we'll be reviewing one of my grail figures, Max Factory's Makoto Sawatari. There may be a shot or two that is minimally NSFW, so proceed accordingly. In addition, there may be a spoiler or two about the Kanon 2006 anime, so if you haven't seen the show, be careful with those spoiler tags...

About the character: Makoto Sawatari is a principal character from the Kanon anime and visual novel. She first makes her appearance in the anime's second epsiode, where she attacks series protagonist Yuichi out of the blue. The attack is not too successful (she collapses immediately afterwards), and so Yuichi takes her back to his aunt's house, where he has taken up residence. Like several characters in the show, Makoto suffers from amnesia, and she can remember little about herself other than her name and the fact that she has some sort of beef with Yuichi (this grudge manifests in many failed pranks against Yuichi). Eventually, Makoto becomes a member of the extended Minase family, and she warms greatly to Yuichi.

Later, it comes to light that Voir le spoilerCacher le spoilerMakoto is in fact a fox that was rescued on Monomi Hill as a kit and was cared for by Yuichi when he was a young boy. Eventually, Yuichi returned the fox back to Monomi Hill when he had to return home from visiting his aunt, leaving the young fox with a feeling of abandonment and a strong desire to see Yuichi again. As Yuichi regains his memory of this event, Makoto's physical condition declines rapidly, and her personality reverts to a very childlike state. Yuichi and Makoto return to a grass-covered Monomi Hill, Makoto's wish to gain human form and see Yuichi having been granted. Makoto then vanishes, leaving Yuichi alone on the snow-covered hill, but one of his classmates assures him that when spring returns, the fox kits on Monomi Hill will be active once again...

I had to rewatch the last few episodes of Makoto's story arc to remember all the specifics of her character bio and this caused me to get a little misty-eyed, so let's move on to the review!

Packaging----------9/10

The front of the box features a large window, and a shot of Makoto.

Hardly a week goes by on MFC that there's not some discussion as to what a "B" grade box from AmiAmi looks like. This is such a box. There was a bit of wear around the edges and a slight crease on the box. The figure was graded B/B, as she'd obviously been opened, but generally box and figure were in good shape.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869362.jpeg

The sides of the box feature another shot of Makoto and an interestingly-shaped window. The snowflake theme is of course completely appropriate.

The back of the box.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869366.jpeg

The box is quite flat (it's only about 6 inches/15 cm deep), and the top features a cute shot of Makoto, so if you want to display the box it won't take up too much space.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869368.jpeg

Overall, the packaging is attractive and most importantly, it got the figure to me safe and sound.

Posing----------9.5/10

Makoto's pose is clearly inspired from a shot of the character during the opening animation of the Kanon (2006) anime. So, let's take a look around her.

Makoto with the shot from the opening animation which clearly inspired the figure.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869377.jpeg

Her pose faithfully recreates a shot from the anime, and as we'll see in the next section, her design oozes personality, so a job well done on this front!

Sculpting----------9/10
Painting----------9.5/10

We'll see that the overall quality and finish of the figure is excellent. Makoto has many great features, and only a few minor flaws.

Makoto with some of the artwork from the US DVD release of Kanon. You can see that her design is very faithful to the character.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869378.jpeg

One of my favorite aspects of this figure is the rendering of Makoto's eyes. I think most figure collectors will agree that the eyes can make the difference between a lifeless figure and one that is vibrant and full of energy. In this case, Makoto's eyes make her look full of life.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869380.jpeg

A closeup of Makoto. Many great features of the figure are evident in the shot below. Again, her eyes stand out. In addition, her smirk reflects the mischievious aspect of Makoto's personality. And, Makoto has tiny little sideburns which are recreated nicely in the figure.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869381.jpeg

A shot of Makoto's hair. She has a large mane of hair, which makes sense since she is Voir le spoilerCacher le spoilera fox after all. The only real flaw I could find in her hair is a little bit of excess glue where her bangs attach. You can't really see it in the photo, though, so it's only noticeable from very, very, very close. In addition, the sculpt of her hair suggests a gentle wind.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869382.jpeg

A closer view of her bangs.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869383.jpeg

Look at all that texture and shading. Even though you normally won't see this part of the figure, one must appreciate that level of detail.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869384.jpeg

One of the key features of Makoto's design is her distinctive hair ribbons. I like the way that the ends of the ribbon are fluttering in the wind.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869395.jpeg

A shot of Makoto's outfit. She wears this blue jacket, yellow turtleneck, and black skirt in most of her screen time. The little folds and creases in the jacket suggest a heavy material.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869396.jpeg

Close inspection of various shots of Makoto reveal that her jacket has little brass buttons. This feature is incorporated into the figure's design.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869397.jpeg

Obligatory panty shot. This is not an ecchi figure by any stretch of the imagination, but her pose makes a pantsu shot unavoidable. Actually, this pantsu shot strikes me as being more cute than pervy.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869398.jpeg

This is really being picky, but I might have liked to see a little more detail on the backs of her knees. When one starts getting picky about such minutiae, you know this is a well-made figure.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869399.jpeg

Words can barely express just how adorable Makoto is.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869408.jpeg

Most of the Kanon anime takes place in the winter, and so Makoto wears a pair of boots. The folds and wrinkles again suggest a heavy material which makes sense. I also like the straps and the little ring on the boots. Her socks are kind of cute and the lines on the socks are pretty straight and uniform in width. That's usually a pretty good way to make a snap judgement about the quality of a figure-look at painted lines.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869409.jpeg

Really, about the only significant flaw I could find is a little trace of a seam line along her leg.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869410.jpeg

Overall, the quality of the sculpt and the painting is excellent. In addition, since she was a B/B preowned item, I was concerned about what the state of the figure would be but with the exception of a little dust, there were no problems on that front either!

Base----------7.5/10

Her base is not really too fancy, as it is plain white with the show's logo.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869411.jpeg
Although the base is kind of plain, I asked myself how I'd do it differently, and I was unable to really think of an alternative. Thus, I won't be too critical about the matter.

Makoto attaches to the base via two pegs in her left foot and one peg in the toe of her right foot. As you can see below, she attaches pretty squarely to the base, so the base certainly does its job in supporting Makoto.

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9.5/10

Before the final wrap-up, let's mention her scale and look at her with some other heroines from the Key universe.

Makoto is listed as 1/8 scale, and because of her pose, she looks just a bit smaller than your typical 1/8 figure. I measure her at right about 7 inches tall (about 17 3/4 cm) as she is posed, and the total length of her body from head to toe is about 8 inches (20 cm). I've seen her canon height listed at 5'3", so that is consistent with 1/8 scale.

Makoto with Minagi, Kano, and Misuzu from Air. I like these Air figures just fine, but see how much more expressive Makoto is compared to the others!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869414.jpeg

Makoto with Kotobukiya's Fuko Ibuki from Clannad. These two have always struck me as being quite similar both in terms of their personalities and their circumstances...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869415.jpeg

Makoto with several characters from Little Busters! I am reminded that that show is sitting in my DVD backlog waiting to be watched...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/12/01/869417.jpeg

In summary, this Makoto is simply an outstanding figure. I initially thought that maybe the figure should have incorporated the bells she wears around her wrist towards the end of her story arc into her design. However, going back and rewatching the show's opening, I realized that the bells don't appear in the image that inspired her design. I'd say she is a must-own figure for fans of the Kanon franchise. I'm kicking myself for not buying her when she was new and now I guess I need an Ayu to go along with her!

Unfortunately, it doesn't snow too often where I live (else all the photos in this review would have been Makoto in the snow), but the next time a good snow comes, you'll find me out in the yard in short order taking shots of Makoto!

Availability (as of this writing)

Can be found pre-owned with a little diligence.

She shows up sporadically through the pre-owned channels; she's not one those figures you'll find on Mandarake or AmiAmi every time you check the site though. I had a run of bad luck with her; every time I found one pre-owned, someone else would grab her first! My B/B one set me back 6400 yen, and it seems like she's been going for somewhere between 6000 and 8000 yen.

Few figures can have this incredible expression like Makoto and Ayu. I bought the two to make the pair. And they are beautiful and very well done to this day.

Makoto is still to this day one of my favorite figures. *Looks at release date* Can this figure really be a decade old? Unbelievable...

I bought Makoto first, and then decided that Ayu really needed to join her, and as you said, both of those figures totally capture the essence of the characters. I'd always kind of hoped that Max Factory would also make a figure of Shiori, but I guess if that hasn't happened yet, then it's not going to happen...

Thanks for the comment!

RockGodItachiIl y a 5 ans#2512890I really enjoyed this review and I'm super happy as I picked up Makoto this morning on AmiAmi pr-owned! She was more expensive than 6,000 jpy but I couldn't resist as now I have her coming my Kanon collection is complete! Well kind of as it's missing Shiori which really bugs me why Kotobukiya didn't make her or Makoto. Anyway once again awesome review you've hyped me up for when I get her! :D

Congratulations on getting Makoto, as she's a very lovely figure. Plus, winter is coming up, and there are few figures that are more photogenic in the snow than Makoto!

I agree that it's a crime that Shiori never got a proper figure, as she might be my favorite of the Kanon girls.

victorviperIl y a 6 ans#1874143In retrospect, I never should have passed her up new. It's too bad no one ever made a proper figure of Shiori, though as she actually might be my favorite character from Kanon. Good luck if you decide to get a Makoto of your own.
Thanks for the comment!
Yes Shiori and Sayuri should get figures, even Akiko has one!

victorviperIl y a 6 ans#1873612Yeah, everything about her really is quite simple, but the figure dies perfectly capture Makoto's personality. I saw your review of Fuko when I was tagging that photo. She too is nicely made, but quite simple.

The figure of Fuko is indeed simple, but I was surprised when I found out she could be cast-off! And I liked her magnetic system for the dog-ears and tail. :)
