I. Opening Words
NOTE! This review will contain major spoilers for the game, Super Danganronpa 2. If you wish to not spoil yourself, please be careful while navigating around here. To be specific, Spoiler #1 crashes in at the class trial of Chapter 1 (towards the end, I believe?) and #2 has to do with Chapter 6.

ANOTHER NOTE! There are butt shots, crotch shots, and panty shots in this review!

Hello, MFC! \(^▽^@)ノ

Yay, finally my second figure review! I was originally supposed to receive the figure a little less than a month ago, but I made a mistake, which led to the arrival of Komaeda delay a lot.

My mother has a major problem against UPS, so if a packaged was going to be delivered via that company, then she told me to make the sending address my father's house in Georgia rather than Florida, where I live. I ordered Komaeda from Big in Japan, and I didn't realize sooner that that was a Japan-based online store, which meant the package would most likely be sent by USPS with the Unregistered SAL option I chose. The figure arrived safe around in the beginning-middle of February at my dad's house, and my father was planning on coming down here on March 22 with the parcel. So because of my mistake, I had to wait a little longer for Komaeda to arrive... but at least he wasn't damaged, lost, or anything that would be considered a worst-case scenario. (“⌒∇⌒”)

II. About the Character

Ah, Komaeda Komaeda Komaeda! One of the many few anime characters that I hardcore-obsess about.

For those of you that don't know, Nagito Komaeda is from a video game called Super Danganronpa 2. He holds the title of Super High School Level Good Luck, Ultimate Lucky Student, or Super Duper High School Luckster, depending on if you go by orenoren's translation, the official Danganronpa English one, or the fan translation of the first game by Project Zetsubou.

"You've got that wrong!"

Spoiler #1
Voir le spoilerCacher le spoilerKomaeda is a very extraordinary and interesting character in my eyes. When you first meet him, you see him as a nice, uke-ish teenager that helps Hinata, the protagonist, out. However, during the class trial of Chapter 1, you find out that he's actually insane and mentally unstable. Hinata fell farther away from Komaeda the more he found out how ill he was with his sickly obsession with hope.

Komaeda considers himself very worthless and doesn't care if he gets murdered. He thinks that "good luck" is a useless talent compared to the other students around him. Although this is true, he still believes that his luck is definite and trusts that it will come in handy when the opportunity calls for it.

IV. Personal Experience
I purchased Komaeda from Big in Japan for 6300 JPY, which was 20% off of the MSRP. I chose Unregistered SAL (aka Regular SAL), which cost 980 JPY, making my total 7280 JPY.

Overall, it was fairly cheap compared to other preorder purchases that I have made. The package was shipped on the day of release and completed the delivery in around two weeks.

V. The Package

The box was medium-sized and paper was used to fill the empty space. The cardboard isn't flimsy, but it's not exactly on the sturdy side.

This is what I meant by "not sturdy". The box withstood a few dents, but now I kind of worry about the other figure that I purchased from Big in Japan... (((╹д╹;)))

VI. Figure Box

The figure box came wrapped up in bubble wrap, which kept it safe from harm!

After removing the bubble wrap, we now have a thin plastic bag that covered the box.

A huge plastic window that shows the figure off.

The left and right sides of the box both show the same thing. It reads:

From the game 'SUPER DANGANRONPA2' comes a 1/8 scale PVC figure of super high school level lucky, Nagito Komaeda! The model is based on the suclptor Shichibee, and is absolutely packed with detail. He comes with a replaceable parts which allow you to desplay him. Try both the seriousness and madness that is Nagito Komaeda with this figure.

Aside from the "suclptor" spelling mistake and a few grammatical errors, I think the Engrish English is pretty good.

The back of the box has a silhouette of Monokuma's evil eye.

Speaking of Monokuma...
By the way, the box is smooth and glossy. On all of the sides, green gradient has been applied.

The top of the box has a small window. I can't really understand why they put that there, since visibility is very low due to the plastic that covers the figure.

The bottom is just the usual boring information that I'm pretty sure not many people pay attention to.

The inside of the box is grey with plastic gloss.

VII. Contents of the Box

The box is extremely long due to the fact that his coat was sculpted so that it looked like it was blowing back in the wind and the blister needed to be large enough to ensure the safety of it.

Hurray for tape on blisters!

Be sure to check under the box for the hidden item!
Spoiler #2
Voir le spoilerCacher le spoilerhttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/03/22/953133.jpeg

I was really happy when I found out that the hidden item was Junko's hand. Though I haven't played the game yet, I read the spoilers and found out why he has her hand, and I found it really interesting.

This small thing was a piece from the base. I don't think it was supposed to be loose though... It randomly fell out when I got the blister out (more on this later).

All of the parts (excluding the main body) that can be manipulated.

The base is plain and simple. It's clear plastic green with smooth black designs. I'm not excited about the base, because I think it could have been better, maybe a class trial stand like the one ITEM #166124 has. Ah well, can't really expect something breathtaking from a company that just started out. At least it's not a boring black base that a certain infamous company almost always uses. ^^;

Lastly, we have the instruction sheet inside a plastic bag.

VIII. The Figure

Nagito Komaeda's official character design sheet.

Whew, we're finally at the figure part! (Many of the pictures are inconsistent with the light, sorry!)

Upon taking the figure out of the blister and removing the clear plastic that protects paint, we have Komaeda in his default pose. He stands 23 cm (Approx. 9 in) from base to his cloud head. This figure is pretty durable in my opinion because I dropped him like three times but nothing chipped. Then again, it might be because I have a carpet floor and where I dropped him from wasn't that high up. ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ

Komaeda stands up straight with his hips at a slight angle. I think this pose suits him a lot, mainly because of what happens later in Super Danganronpa 2 with him and what you find out about him.

This is how big he is compared to other figures. I don't have any other scale figure, so I can't compare him to another. ^^;

One thing I like about this figure is the windswept look it has. Everything looks very natural here.

Komaeda's main sprite from the game.

Komaeda's lips have a very light shade of flesh color.

Seam lines are well hidden! (°∀°)b
By the by, as you go through the pictures, you'll notice that his hair shines in the light! Don't worry though, it doesn't sparkle as much as Edward Cullen's naked chest. d(°∀°)b

The seam is kind of noticeable from the sides.

Shining, shimmering, splendid! Tell me-

To switch the faces, you need to remove the neck and the front hair part.

Spoiler #1
Voir le spoilerCacher le spoilerhttp://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130710131704/danganronpa/images/5/5a/Event_50_%281%29.png
The true side of Komaeda.

Overall, the 3-D version of Komaeda is just like the 2-D version.

The coat has been beautifully sculpted while preserving the odd fringe design. I love how the coat painting used many shades of dark green to give a sense of depth and detail to the figure.

Nice coat details here with the thin lines.

At first, I thought that the series of small dashes below the SS/55 was a major flaw, but I looked over the character design sheet and saw that it's supposed to be there. Whew! \(*T▽T*)/

Komaeda's big hood has been faithfully reproduced with almost the exact pattern details.

I love the detailed zippers. The slight inconsistency of the applied silver painting doesn't bother me much.

The patterns again look good. Here, you can see where the silver paint from the zipper is not fully painted, but this is only something you can notice with a camera or by getting very close to the figure. The same goes to the excess paint on the drawstring.

The drawstrings are slightly bendable (but they're not super bendable like the Clamp no Kiseki series, so you shouldn't mess with them too much)! I like how something so small looks very much alive as if they're really moving to the rhythm of the wind.

The jacket wrinkles look fine and dandy like real cloth and all of the pockets are placed in the right positions.

The hands are sculpted with great details. Algernon adapted it well from Danganronpa's realistic style of hands. If you look carefully, you can see that there's very light orange shading on them.

Spoiler #2
Voir le spoilerCacher le spoilerhttp://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130703065136/danganronpa/images/7/7f/Event_147.png

Komaeda with Junko's hand.
I don't exactly dislike the unstable red paint, but I wish it was better.

Komaeda's shirt looks clean and well. The print design looks spot on, with the exception of the slightly faded and worn out look it should have. The folds and wrinkles look very natural.

"Flat as an iron board" doesn't just apply to chests...

Rock 'em hips, Komaeda.
This isn't really a spoiler. It's just that the way I describe things may weird you out, so in case you're completely fine with missing this part out, I've set up a spoiler tag.
Voir le spoilerCacher le spoilerMy favorite enjoyment from this figure would have to be...

These beautifully-sculpted smooth, long legs.

These exquisite legs, magnificent from any angle you look at it from.

His fit black pants do nothing but bring out the sexiness and allure that his legs have.

I never dreamed that I would be able to look at...

this cute butt. ლ(́◉◞౪◟◉‵ლ)

Okay, all jokes aside, the skull chain is one of my favorite parts about this figure. The high level of details shown here really catch my eye.

The chain actually doesn't complete its loop. It stays there afloat and the material is soft, highly bendable plastic like the type that Clamp no Kiseki uses.

A demonstration of what I mean by very flexible.

Once you move the soft chain around, it will not move back to its initial position as shown above.

I like the smooth feel of the boots and the zippers are well done too.

As stated earlier, the small green piece came from the figure. You insert the piece from the back of the base.

IX. Flaws
Enough with the good parts, now on to the bad parts! Some of them have already been discussed in the above chapter, but this part will talk more in depth about them. This section is mostly here to point out things I noticed, and so it's not that I mind all of the things.

This one is kind of hard to see, but the pinky has excess paint, so it lost its slimness and looks clumpy.

The zipper is not fully painted.

There are air bubbles inside the base.

A part of the base is loose and fell out of the box when I first opened it.

It's difficult to switch hands because the hole and the peg are closely fit and do not have surfaces suitable for sliding.

Now THIS is a major problem. Similar to the hand peg problem, replacing the arm is very difficult.

You literally have to yank the arm off the first time you switch the parts out. However, after that, for me, now every time I place the arm inside the hole, it will come off easily if I push on it.

This is most likely due to the fact that the parts don't actually fit together. (More on this on the next flaw.)

The line is very apparent on the exchangeable arm. Even if you adjust the arm so that you can't see it well anymore, the side opposite of the fixing will look unpleasant. It seems to me that the peg and hole don't really match up well.

Spoiler #2
Voir le spoilerCacher le spoilerhttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/03/23/953281.jpeg
I know that the it's hard to see the above picture, but the red paint sometimes bleeds into the skin and is left uncolored.

Also, isn't Junko's hand supposed to have more peach than Komaeda's? Or has become pale because there is no blood to keep it alive?

The back part of the shoe has an noticeable gap.

FLAW #10

If you compare Komaeda's lower coat pockets in figure form to 2-D form, you can see that the former's pocket is smaller, when it should be slightly larger.

FLAW #11

The chain doesn't complete its loop.

FLAW #12

The t-shirt and jacket print should have a slightly faded look.

FLAW #13

There is an apparent gap between Komaeda's collarbone area and the t-shirt.

FLAW #14

This is just me being weird, but I wish they put more life into his crotch. It doesn't have to be as apparent as ITEM #166705 or ITEM #176651, I just want something that's not a flat iron board.

X. Photo Gallery
This entire gallery will be a spoiler since I left his other face on along with his secret item.

Return of the Sebastian's cat thieves.

Miku is riding on Komaeda... I mean riding on his back.

Komaeda - still insane as ever.

Komaeda Coat - a chair for those days when you're in despair and need a sit-down pep talk about the philosophy of hope.

101 ways to use Miku's twin tails.

Cute couple. They're even holding hands.

Komaeda at your hopeful service.

XII. Summary
+ Well sculpted coat
+ The secret item
+ Excellent details on the chain
+ Nice legs
+ Accurate face
+ All jacket and t-shirt designs are present
+ Creative shiny hair

- Gaps are apparent in many places
- Chain does not complete its loop
- A little paint bleeds and misses

Overall, I love the figure. Though there were some design flaws, those can be overlooked if you just concentrate on the many wonderful things about the figure.

XIII. Final Thoughts
I had a great time reviewing Komaeda and experimenting on him. After acquiring the figure, I finally feel like playing Super Dangannronpa 2. I finished the first game, but I left it at that and started spamming songs on Project Diva 2nd. Maybe I'll play it after I finish Project Diva Extend. Anyways, this is a lovely figure in my opinion. I wish I can also get Junko, but I'm waiting for Nanami by Phat!, Komaeda by Kotobukiya, and Hinata by Kotobukiya to reveal their prices and release dates, which probably won't be any time soon. (o;TωT)o

Now it's time for the final verdict!

... Wrong game.

Still, wrong game.

Well, jokes aside, I give Komaeda Nagito 1/8 Scale by Algernon Product a GREAT. Thanks for reading!

YuirikoIl y a 6 ans#2060186I'm surprised that you actually consider his shiny hair a good thing :0 Anyway, great review! ^^

Thanks~ ^^

Yeah, I was surprised too! Some people said that they didn't like the shine, so I thought that I wasn't going to like it either. But, now that I have him physically, I think it looks good in the light. I've never really heard of a figure that has sparkly hair, so the uniqueness gets me too.

AkiraIl y a 6 ans#2056740Nice review! It has a lot of information and pictures :D
Personally, I think is a little... Too flawed of a figure for such a simple pose (I mean he is just standing). But Angelmon seems to be a little new to doing scales so idk.
I do have more faith in Koto's Komaeda, at least he will have pretty eyes for sure, haha
And of course, thanks for your review c:

Thanks! Well, hopefully, Algernon will start to improve as they make more scale figures. ^^
I'll definitely buy Kotobukiya's Komaeda since he'll most likely be based off of the official promotional picture.

GothlequinIl y a 6 ans#2056965Wonderfully done review I really enjoyed it! Thanks for making me feel like i need a figure to a game i've yet to play XD
Thank you! I still have to play the game too, and now the figure is telling me to play it immediately! 。(*^▽^*)ゞ
