Kotobukiya 1/6 Mikoto Misaka "Summer Day"Kotobukiya 1/6 Mikoto Misaka "Summer Day"Review

Bringing the hobby to your door.

Summer is nearly here. The days are getting longer, and there is a warm breeze in the air. So, isn't it the perfect time to review a swimsuit figure?

In all seriousness, today we'll be reviewing Kotobukiya's "Summer Day" figure of Mikoto Misaka, a web/mail-order exclusive from back in December of 2013. As a swimsuit figure, many of the shots in this review could be considered a little bit NSFW (and this will be a very image-heavy review!), so it's not too late to turn back...

About the character: Mikoto Misaka is the main character from A Certain Scientific Railgun. She, like most of the students in Academy City, is an esper; in fact, she is one of only a handful of level 5 espers in the city. She is known as the Railgun and she possesses a tremendous power to wield electricity and manipulate magnetic fields. Mikoto has a strong sense of justice, and she will often act impulsively.

There's an awful lot to discuss about this particular figure, so let's get to it!

Packaging----------8/10

The front of the box has a shot of Mikoto in her t-shirt and shows off both of her possible facial expressions.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/03/983441.jpeg

The sides of the box show Mikoto both with and without her t-shirt.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/03/983442.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/03/983443.jpeg

The back of the box features a number of shots of the figure and the Railgun S logo. Oddly, there are no windows in the box! Then again, this figure was a mail-order/web exclusive, so I guess it's not like these were meant to be sitting on a store shelf.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/03/983444.jpeg

Mikoto is quite a large figure, and the box is correspondingly big, measuring 34 by 18 by 18 cm. Considering her size, the multiple optional parts of the figure, and the fact that she'll need a large shipping box, you'll want to budget conservatively for shipping costs if you decide to track down your own Mikoto.

Mikoto in the blister. You can see her alternate face, the garden hose, and the little ties for her bikini.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/03/983445.jpeg

Getting her set up is pretty straightforward, but Kotobukiya includes an instruction sheet if there's any doubt about getting her ready to display.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/03/983446.jpeg

The garden hose is held in place by three small pegs.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000713.jpeg

The hose fits easily in her hand.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000714.jpeg

Once the water part is attached to the end of the hose, she's ready to go!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000715.jpeg

Posing----------9/10

Mikoto's pose is quite energetic. Based on her pose, it looks like she's embroiled in a water fight. It's the sort of thing you could easily imagine Mikoto, Kuroko, and company doing on a summer day.

Let's take a look at her in one of her possible configurations.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000716.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000722.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000723.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000724.jpeg

From some of the photos here on MFC, I thought her "smiling" face might be a little too plain, but it's actually quite cute! The little bit of blush is in character for Mikoto, and her eyes are quite expressive.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000725.jpeg

I'm a little bit on the fence about her t-shirt. Since she's playing around in the water, you'd expect the material to be slightly translucent, but there are a few spots where it looks more cloudy than translucent.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000726.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000727.jpeg

Mikoto is supposed to be grabbing onto her t-shirt, and Koto pulls off the effect pretty well. However, translucent fabric is one of the most difficult effects to pull off realistically. Sometimes, what is meant to look like translucent fabric ends up looking more like a piece of plastic, and the shininess of her shirt does make it look quite plasticky.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000729.jpeg

If you prefer, the shirt can be removed and Mikoto can be displayed in her bikini. The shirt splits in half, and you can see the seam. It's not terribly conspicuous.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000730.jpeg

The seam on the other side is a little more obvious.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000731.jpeg

Large pegs in the shirt keep it together. The shirt is quite rigid, and so it's easy to get it removed and surprisingly it's equally easy to put it back on again.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000732.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000733.jpeg

Removing her head makes it much easier to get the shirt removed. Note how some of the paint from her hair transferred on to her neck and upper back. Fortunately, you can't really see that part of her when she's reassembled.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000734.jpeg

Personally, I think she looks much better displayed in her swimsuit. IMO, the white shirt just doesn't contrast enough with her pale skin but the bright orange color of her swimsuit really makes the figure pop. Orange is a color you don't really see too often on figures, so that orange bikini will definitely draw the eye!

Let's take a look at Mikoto in her bikini.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000735.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000745.jpeg

Isn't she cute?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000746.jpeg

Another interesting feature of the figure is that Mikoto has an alternate expression. The right side of her bangs is removed to allow her face to be swapped out.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000747.jpeg

Both of her facial expressions.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000748.jpeg

Reversing the process gives us a pouty Mikoto. One of the things I like about Mikoto is she is not a one-note character; she can be silly, deadly serious, shy, and every now and then she has a little tsundere in her. So personally, I prefer her pouty face. You could easily imagine that Kuroko is nearby and she's being her usual lecherous self, to Mikoto's dismay...

Sculpting----------8/10
Painting----------7/10

Now that we've seen all the different ways Mikoto can be displayed, let's take a look at the quality of her finish. Despite the fact that her outfit is quite simple, it does have a surprising number of painting flaws and she does have one or two significant issues with her sculpt.

The parts in her hair do a pretty good job concealing where her bangs can be removed.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000750.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000751.jpeg

The white trim on her bikini top is not quite uniformly painted.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000752.jpeg

The way her collarbones are sort of smushed together looks a little odd.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000753.jpeg

The white trim on the back of her top is also a little messy, but I do like the definition on her upper back and shoulders!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000754.jpeg

The trim on her bikini bottom is a little bit uneven.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000755.jpeg

There's a weird-looking spot on her hip; it almost looks like a ripple in her flesh. Also, there are a couple spots on the figure where her skin has orangish patches. It's not that noticeable, but you still know it's there...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000756.jpeg

I do like the way her navel and stomach are sculpted, though. You can see that orangish spot again as well.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000757.jpeg

Those issues with the white trim are also present on the front of her bikini bottom.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000759.jpeg

The ties on her bikini are the sorts of things that could be really chunky, but they're decently sculpted.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000760.jpeg

There's a spot on the side of her bikini top where it looks like it didn't get completely painted.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000761.jpeg

There's a little bit of a seam running down the side of her torso. It's faint, but it's most definitely there.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000762.jpeg

It should be noted that Mikoto's shirt is reasonably thick, and without the shirt I think she looks just a little bit skinny.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000766.jpeg

Is it really possible to bend your spine like that? She looks a little awkward from that angle.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000739.jpeg

Her thighs are sculpted nicely, but you can see that orangish effect on her skin again. I guess Kotobukiya was trying to simulate a tan line, but it turned out a little odd...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000765.jpeg

Her hands are generally well sculpted, but you can see a spot where some green paint from the hose transferred to her thumb. I thought it might just be reflection, but no, her hand now has a little green spot. Thus, I'd make sure to keep the hose from coming into contact with Mikoto's body as much as reasonably possible. It's also something to be aware of if you're thinking about getting her pre-owned.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000763.jpeg

Her toenails are painted, which is always a nice little touch.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000764.jpeg

Base----------6/10

Her base is really plain, which is too bad. I would have liked to see something just a little more elaborate, particularly since this figure was a limited release!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000767.jpeg

The base on the more common "Beach Side" Mikoto ITEM #133551 is a lot fancier. This makes the rather bland base on this figure a little more disappointing.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000768.jpeg

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------8.5/10

Let's see Mikoto with some other figures and talk about her scale.

The Koto "Beach Side" Mikoto ITEM #133551 is 1/7 scale, and you can see this Mikoto is quite a bit larger.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000769.jpeg

I do like both of the facial expressions on this Mikoto better than the one on the Beach Side figure, though.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000770.jpeg

Koto's maid Mikoto ITEM #61678 is also 1/6 (and is quite large herself!).

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000771.jpeg

Mikoto with FREEing's ginormous 1/4 Kuroko ITEM #135060.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000772.jpeg

This Mikoto is just over 10 inches (25.5 cm) tall, and factoring in her base and the way she's holding her arm over her head, the total height of the figure ends up being about 11.5 inches (29 cm). She's definitely 1/6 scale.

Sena ITEM #106566 is 1/7 and not exactly small herself, but Mikoto towers over her as well.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000773.jpeg

Mikoto with Griffon's Tamaki Kousaka ITEM #103700, who is quite gigantic herself. Do you suppose there's a little chest-envy going on here?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000777.jpeg

IMO, tsundere + bikini = win. Ruri ITEM #117545 is 1/7 scale and Retia ITEM #79114 is 1/8 for comparison.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/05/23/1000778.jpeg

In summary:

Arguments for: large scale, two very cute faces and multiple display options make for a highly customizable Mikoto, and that orange bikini really makes her stand out on the shelf!

Arguments against: bland base, a surprising number of flaws in sculpt and paint, high price point.

Would I recommend this figure? Now, that's a really tough call. I have absolutely no regrets about buying her, since I really enjoy most things Railgun. However she will not be cheap and considering that her quality could have been better, I'd say that if you only need one Mikoto figure on your shelf, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this Mikoto as the one. Complicating the matter, that other Koto Mikoto ITEM #133551 is a fine swimsuit figure at a much lower price point and if you're willing to go high-end for a Mikoto, FREEing's 1/4 Bunny Mikoto ITEM #135150 won't set you back too much more than this figure, and is in my opinion a superior figure. But, if you are a fan of the character and you've got a little extra room in your figure budget, you might consider adding her to your collection.

Availability (as of this writing)

Not rare, but not common.

She was a limited release, so she might take some looking for. Accordingly, she will not be cheap. A couple have shown up recently on AmiAmi for around 9500 yen, and I've seen her go for anywhere from 8500-12000 yen. Shipping won't be cheap on this figure, so shipping included you might have to budget 12000-15000 yen for this particular Mikoto.

Yeah, the shirt is quite plasticky. 5500 yen was a pretty good deal for this figure though!

sailormatlacIl y a 5 ans#2565709A fine and honest review. I had exactly the same opinion when I got mine: weird body sculpt and pose, obvious paint defect but among the best Mikoto facial expression out there (that's what convinced me to pay for her as she's my only Mikoto figure except for a nendo). The wet t-shirt is truly a gimmick. I'm seriously thinking about getting the bunny one, I'm just not into bunny girl enough I guess. Oh, and you're right, orange bikini rules!

Thanks for the comment. I still haven't seen a Mikoto with a better face, although ITEM #232008 looks not too bad. Then again, that figure is Griffon, so all bets are off until release, and I don't know if I'm ready to make that plunge into 1/2.5 land.

Yes, I agree about the t-shirt. I took the photos and right back in the box it went!

victorviperIl y a 6 ans#2161667She is super-cute! The figure I had in mind where the transparent fabric effect didn't go to well was ITEM #4716 . Fortunately, Mikoto's shirt is a little bit better done, but they should have just made the shirt transparent or semi-opaque, but they tried to do a little of both...

Oh man, don't even start about MiG-60! xD Her transparency is so bad and the material is so thick it makes her look so...unflattering. Quite a shame, since I can see that underneath she wears a nicely detailed corset-like shirt. I have been thinking about it multiple times to try and cutt off the transparant part...

THANKS FOR THE WELL-ROUNDED REVIEW. THE BUTT OF IT ALL IS THE PAINTJOB UNFORTUNATELY. AT THE BOTTOM OF THE REVIEW I THOUGHT WE'D GET A LITTLE MORE LOVE FOR THOSE FEET. <3 MAKOTO HAS ALWAYS BEEN MOE. THIS FIGURE KEEPS IN TUNE WITH THAT.

I agree wtih the problem area's. I always feel a bit disappointed when I see a painting flaw on the bigger figures (1/8th and above), but it never bothers me too much, and find myself loving them flaws and all <3

That's probably a good synopsis of my thoughts about this Mikoto. If Koto had done a better job just painting her bikini, it would have been the difference between a merely good figure and a great one, since she is really, really cute!

Thanks for reading!

I have to agree that the transparant t-shirt-effect isn't perfect, but it's one of the best I've seen so far on a figure! The creases also look really good!
