Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha The Movie 1st Fate Testarossa YamatoMahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha The Movie 1st Fate Testarossa Yamato

! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

! This is a review of a figure in an leotard, which can be considered NSFW by some ! Also, this review was made from older pictures that I had stored on my computer, so they are not top-quality.

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Fate Testarossa ENCYCLOPEDIA #1891 with her appearance in Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha The Movie 1st ENCYCLOPEDIA #321 ! This figure ITEM #42209 is made by Yamato ENCYCLOPEDIA #7634 .

I will start off with telling some more about her background.

Background

I'll have to start with shamefully admitting that I haven't watched anything from Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha myself yet. I have been telling myself to start watching it, but I just never get to it and each time when I'm in the mood for anime I pick others to watch from my piles of unwatched DVD-boxes. Something I was told by Nanoha fans that makes this series different from your average Magical Girl series, is that in Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha the action is a lot more powerfull (with brute force and people getting hit), making it a lot more fitting for adults to watch and not your typical Magical Girl series.

That aside, what I do know from the series is that it's about a young girl called Nanoha, who one day rescues a ferret who turns her into a magical girl. This ferret, who is actually a shapeshifting mage, gives her the task to find 21 ancient artefacts. These artefacts can be dangerous when in the wrong hands, so it's up to her to obtain them before someone else does!

The character of which this figure is, Fate, is also after the ancient artefacts and with that a rival of Nanoha. She was sent on this mission by her mother.

The reason why and how I got her

This figure is probably one of my most random buys! I was actually talking to SINCERY on Skype and he mentioned he was selling most of the items from his Nanoha collection. Then he asked if I would be interested in ITEM #42209 and gave me a very good price. I looked a bit at her MFC page (I saw her face wasn't the most beautiful, but I was impressed with her base and pose!) and after a while I thought "oh, why not?" and bought her from him. I helped a friend and I got a figure out of it, where could it go wrong?

Original art

I couldn't find any 100% matching art with this posing.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0jYXlQVOk1o/VEqZ9adKSnI/AAAAAAAAB-4/bu2Ryk_FoSU/s549/fate2.jpg

The closest image I could find to the posing is this above one. It's a bit pixel-y, because it's a screenshot from a game. Although she is wearing different armor (I think this is also from a season where Fate is older), we can see the same spell circle and weapon.

The Box

Considering the size of this figure and especially the base, I was quite surprised at this "small" box! I actually expected her to be attached or next to the base and to get a very wide box!

The box itself has one big front window and two small windows in star-shapes on the sides. The front window is very nice, but the side-windows are so small that I can barely take a look at the parts behind them (I guess they are also more meant as decorative). The back of the box shows some pictures of the figure and is overall quite simple when it comes to design.

First Look

The blisters of this figure are actually quite small (considering her size) and the parts are pretty close to eachother. This is great for the overall size of these blisters (and the box), but maybe a bit less when it comes to safety. To give an example: If for some reason the right part of her axe would break, then it would fall on top of her head in the blister.

Still, I think this way of blisters would be preferred by many collectors, because you wouldn't get any crazy shipping and it's still quite safe overall!

The Figure - with axe

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ZsbsRo60vzw/VEf1uMUzXjI/AAAAAAAAB6Q/a_yXHGAL6vU/s912/IMG_2097.JPG

Even when just put together with her normal weapon, this figure already makes quite an impact. I like how it looks that she "jumps" out of the spell circle she made! The only thing I wasn't too happy about from a distance was her face. But this was also something I was prepared for when I was getting her, because it was a general complaint where I read a lot about. Luckily I also got distracted by her awesome thighs (more on that later on)!

The Figure - with powered-up axe

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7RsGbLnJHTY/VEf1vK3juDI/AAAAAAAAB6c/Z7Ma4snbUks/s1024/IMG_2098.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ZtqPxZ3GEdQ/VEf1xHbnUbI/AAAAAAAAB6w/mLXArfs15Us/s912/IMG_2101.JPG

Now, with her powered-up weapon she makes a lot more impact! It actually makes me think why they even made the option to also display her with her regular weapon when you can have this? Voir le spoilerCacher le spoilerOr is it something related to the series where I don't know about, since I haven't watched it (yet)?

Let's also not forget that this figure is big, which is also the reason why I couldn't photograph this figure at my usual place! For size reference: Voir le spoilerCacher le spoiler
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-uLQ3VBmRiqU/VEqkHf2QuuI/AAAAAAAAB_U/J_do2PaijxU/s912/IMG_2130.JPG

This is her size in a regular detolf!!! She takes up a lot of the width!

Looking at all the details!

Let's get more up-close with this figure!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-x7ebCY72qNg/VEf1ygY_xuI/AAAAAAAAB68/3NzGMBamCek/s1024/IMG_2102.JPG

The face is always an important factor with a figure. Unfortunately Fate's face is quite...weird to call it like that. I wouldn't say it is ugly, but it's certainly not pretty either. For me, I think it's mainly her mouth. There is a lot of flesh color painted next to her teeth, making it look like her teeth are really small. Next to that, her eyes also look a bit too far apart?

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Zu0LEwlV9Us/VEf1zC6eCAI/AAAAAAAAB7A/nAga34QDGAU/s912/IMG_2103.JPG

Fate's bangs show a bit of leftovers and casting-lines, but I like the movement in them.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-McsJqwsur8A/VEf10FndbSI/AAAAAAAAB7I/TQi0-zu9g9M/s912/IMG_2104.JPG

There is one big seamline on top of her head. Her bangs are placed higher than the rest of her hair, so the seamline is quite hidden and you can only see it if you look at her from above.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vjCIrk0E_vQ/VEf7zypEuzI/AAAAAAAAB-Q/sWCsV8zt7Js/s912/IMG_2106.JPG

Her ribbons are sculpted quite nicely and the paint is simple, but very shiny, giving it a bit of a leather-like feel, just as the cape.

Voir le spoilerCacher le spoilerThe next 2 pictures are craptastic, sorry.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-h59N1G2aEh4/VEf12ZqtL7I/AAAAAAAAB7Y/vJAmY6N-8Z8/s912/IMG_2107.JPG

The back of her head shows some details when it comes to "pulled" hair. Here we can also see some gradients in the paint...

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Y6nkVmnaAP8/VEf11LMLatI/AAAAAAAAB7Q/j9fgnnbX5Cg/s912/IMG_2105.JPG

...that continue all the way in her long twintails! The details on her hair here are quite clean, which I found surprising after seeing her bangs.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-gCpqkUrpf7g/VEf13b-TEwI/AAAAAAAAB7g/gINA38NEpts/s720/IMG_2108.JPG

Fate wears a very tight-fitting leotard. She is quite flat-chested as she is a young girl Voir le spoilerCacher le spoilerlater on in the series she grows older and she gets more "there" too. I was actually the most surprised here at her armpit, it had details I didn't expect!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-miI35TBFx_A/VEf14r5_6II/AAAAAAAAB7o/YxvF7q_xRxA/s912/IMG_2109.JPG

The overall design of the leotard is very simple and most of the details consist of small golden clasps and red straps. All the painting was done pretty nicely.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-7qWYciSzpM4/VEf2ABbcz5I/AAAAAAAAB8Y/buAxiJlPPg0/s912/IMG_2117.JPG

Both her arms and hands are simple in sculpt, but look realistic. I like how the gloves look!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-LkguLL9C18M/VEf16DX1cBI/AAAAAAAAB7w/_aB-N1LbIIE/s912/IMG_2112.JPG

A nice part of her costume design is the belt which looks to also hold up her skirt. The belt has quite some darker shading and the paint is almost flawless.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ESHHdKyZmaU/VEf16_WRUfI/AAAAAAAAB74/iLr1jKSxH60/s720/IMG_2113.JPG

It's not really peeking under a skirt, because she wears a leotard, right? The most surprising here I found to be that the leotard was a bit smaller at her crotch than her character designs and at other figures from her.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-lAYcA2wfRJk/VEf18Yii8JI/AAAAAAAAB8A/W9vtXR4jkoI/s912/IMG_2114.JPG

This part of the figure I really like! Her thighs and behind are just perfect! Not too big, not too small, still looking healthy~ Voir le spoilerCacher le spoilerToo small/skinny thighs is a pet peeve of mine on figures.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-SICZWnl08k8/VEf2HAuz1QI/AAAAAAAAB9A/wxqniSukyl4/s720/IMG_2122.JPG

Her nice thighs lead to her over-the-knee-socks. They have a great glossy finish, making them look more like spandex than your regular sock-material.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-KPaKahAYkPQ/VEf2IP94CLI/AAAAAAAAB9M/69-rfkfxWz4/s720/IMG_2123.JPG

Fate's shoes are with a small heel and little details. They are also glossy, but less than her socks. The ribbon on it is a bit blotchy, but not too bad.

Important to point out here is that this foot is all that connects Fate to the base! This is also the furthest I could push the peg in. I think they knew what they were doing when they designed the figure, but it just feels so little for such a big figure and big base. Most of the weight of the base though, is in the action/explosion part and it's probably the main reason the whole thing doesn't topple over. Anyway, I had her on display for 6 months and her previous owner for about 2 years and nothing happened to her.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-yszt39a6TIQ/VEf2GPvgvGI/AAAAAAAAB84/L1FMCAAI_QM/s912/IMG_2121.JPG

Her cape is really big and although simple when it comes to paint, it has quite some nice wrinkles in the sculpt. The weird dents Voir le spoilerCacher le spoilerhttps://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-EMxSWlfJi4w/VEf1wRIxtTI/AAAAAAAAB6o/31uS1nsRF64/s1152/IMG_2100.JPG are not to be seen from certain angles and when it comes to touch, you can only feel it slightly. A very weird manufacuring error? Luckily it doesn't attract much attention and you probably wouldn't notice them there if the figure is normally displayed.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-i2LUcBoCSJg/VEf2BUYBgsI/AAAAAAAAB8g/1vQTG6zNas4/s912/IMG_2118.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-G9ow5z-7xD4/VEf2Et2BnMI/AAAAAAAAB8w/nfDXJ7Tup7g/s720/IMG_2120.JPG

Fate's weapon is also quite an eye catcher on this figure! The painting is not that special, but it has qute some nice, small details in the sculpt!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-fiXE23WkJZk/VEf2DBIuFaI/AAAAAAAAB8o/9JS4FGzCRsA/s912/IMG_2119.JPG

The magic that comes out of the axe is made of semi-transparant yellow PVC. It looks pretty good, although I think a more brighter yellow would have fitted better.

Talking from the top to further down about Fate has now brought us to her base.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-W0SHA5z40Ck/VEf2I8ow0rI/AAAAAAAAB9U/eVhSjYE05Cs/s720/IMG_2124.JPG

And what a thing it is! Huge and with a lot of detail! It is also quite heavy too.

I really love the details in the spell circle. I know it's "just" a decal, but I can stare at it and admire it for a long time! And because Fate's feet don't touch any parts of the decal I think this will stay looking good for a long time!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-ZnE2PW7hN3w/VEf2KE09Z4I/AAAAAAAAB9c/yzn73a8HFUU/s1440/IMG_2125.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-ZH3g-AgymE4/VEf2LWUIGwI/AAAAAAAAB9k/wRDVTCZhr80/s1024/IMG_2126.JPG

The action/explosion-part of the base looks a bit...cheap? The shape of it is great, but especially with the simple painting and the copyrightdisclaimers being on it, it doesn't feel as high quality as the rest of the base. Still, it's not bad either.

Summary or tl;dr

Positive
- Very small box, considering the size of this figure!
- Overall when it comes to size and posing, she is impressive!
- Love the base design!
- Her thighs and behind. :>

Neutral
- Could become an easy leaner in the future?
- Small painting errors.

Negative
- Her face.

The Scores

Sculpting 8/10
The sculpting on this figure is really nice. There were some unexpected details, but there are also some flaws.

Painting 7/10
Overall the paint is very good, but I think it's a bit too simple for a figure with this price tag (9800 yen for a figure in 2011 was higher than average price). A lot of parts have no shading at all, while at some other parts (such as her belt), you can see shading done very well.

Posing 9/10
I love the posing. It's great, full of power and action! Wherever you place her, her posing and size will attract people to look at her for sure!

Base 9/10
I absolutely love the base, but have some small concerns about how sturdy the figure is on it. That aside, this is an amazing base and if it wasn't for the bit more cheap looking action/explosion-part, it would have been a 10/10.

Packaging 8/10
Very small for the size of this figure! The box also has a big window to get a good look at her.

Enjoyment 7/10
Although I got quite a liking to her, shortly after I bought this figure I began a big re-organisation of my collection and she doesn't really fit anymore in it. I like her too much to put her up for sale, but I'm not completely sure what to do with her yet!! That's why currently, my enjoyment isn't that high, but it could get a lot higher (or lower) in the future!

Conclusion

This figure mainly makes an impact because of her size, special posing and base. She is a huge eye catcher and looks especially great from a distance! From up close she has quite some good points, but also some flaws, with probably her face being the biggest. This is a really nice figure, but I wouldn't recommend her to everyone, I suggest to take a good look at the pictures and think about her (small) flaws before getting her!

Availability

This was a figure with a high release price (9800 yen may be under normal prices today, but 3+ years ago it wasn't!). Her price was probably a factor that also made her hit bargain bin and for a while you could find her new in stores for 3-4K yen. Now, as far as I know and could find, she is not that easily available new again and you'll have to go the second hand route for her. Some quick searches made me find her on Mandarake for prices of around 6K yen (here is one available right now: ekizo.mandarake... ). I also just noticed an user putting her up for sale SALE #58140 a few days ago for an insanely cheap price that makes me think a lot about how damaged the box is. But anyway if someone from the US or Canada sees this he/she could send a message and see what it's all about! If you could get her for $10 and $10-20 shipping, this is a steal!

And to finish it!

Currently I have my figures in storage, but here is how I used to display her in my collection!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9Sp5wxD-ZvE/VEf2M9KEfJI/AAAAAAAAB9s/20Wc72ocRBU/s912/IMG_2133.JPG

I put her on the shelf with my more brighter-colored (especially when it comes to haircolor) figures! I have no idea yet where I will put her when I display her next!

VioFitz (Il y a 4 ans) #2447971Yeah, it's like stretched down making her head looks wide, yeah... Photoshop would do the job very easy on it.
Yeah, other than her head, I was astounded on her overall figure, for her face I only liked her mouth sculpt actually. You welcome!

Yeah there is nothing wrong with her mouth! It's mainly the eyes and the nose a little bit...anyway, she would look great if you display her a little bit higher than eye level! But personally I'm still not sure about keeping her or not...

The rest of her is amazing indeed! It's quite interesting how something so small like a face/expression can have such an impact on the overall feel of a figure, don't you think?
And thank you very much! ^^

Seems like you lucked out with Fate. I can't believe you haven't watched Nanoha and I was recommending you watch Popotan... *shakes head*.

Thank you very much! ^^

I'm also still ashamed to say that I didn't watch Nanoha yet. >.< But I have so little time...and I prefer to marathon series. I really need a few weeks off and watch all the stuff that I should watch, haha!

VioFitz (Il y a 4 ans) #2431992Lol that face... Looks like her face was kinda squished down, It makes me want to stretch/fix that face thru photoshop, though. But, other than that she looks amazing, loving the details of her body especially on her butt, crotch, & armpit. Nice review as usual there!

Moro (Il y a 4 ans) #2426796SO MANY BOXES. Well your collection is 4x the size of mine so it makes sense. I live in a house but it's not anywhere near as big as it needs to be honestly. In a couple years maybe I can move into a bigger one.
Aheh, no offense taken. I'm already less motivated than I was when I started the job and I haven't even been working here for a full year. When nobody else seems willing to make an effort, it kind of saps your will to make an effort yourself. :( Especially when no one seems to notice. Right now I'm doing something even less worthy of notice and it's a bit frustrating sometimes because if I excel at this task, no one will notice or care... I still try because I'm keeping the damn department afloat BY MYSELF even at this level. This isn't a permanent job anyway, I'm planning on staying at it for maybe another year or so because I'm saving up for graduate school. After I get my master's degree I can get a job that feels a bit more rewarding.
Oh, I've been a fan of Deino's work for a few years, since before I collected figures actually. So when the Calne Ca scale was announced it was definitely a !!!!!!! moment.
Man a Calne Ca cosplay would be nuts. Especially if you managed to walk on stilts, you'd be so tall. Is there any official height for Calne Ca, come to think of it? In my mental image she's always like 8 feet tall but I don't know if I've just pulled that out of nowhere.

Haha yeah, but I hope to sell a few. Current appartment is temporary and I hope for not more than 3 years. Almost everything in my collection will stay boxed for now and I hope to sell quite some items in the coming 3 years so I'll have to move a lot less when I go to my (hopefully) final home. :)

And I can understand. My previous job was in an office where 90% of the workers weren't happy with their job and most of them were looking for and replying to other jobs even during worktime! The way co-workers handle things can also influence you a lot. And good luck with that! :) I doubted about getting a master's myself for a long time, but I decided to keep it at bachelor's.

Sounds the same as me with Humikane Shimada. :) I was a Mecha Musume fan long before I started collecitng figures, although it took me a long time before a big part of my collection became Mecha Musume-related. I used to be the typical newbie that didn't know where to buy figures and only bought stuff at conventions for years. Luckily only a few bootlegs were bought during that time.

Pfffeewwww, now I think about it...I think not? Although I see her as a normal length girl, but on stilts, so yeah quite big.

So far I have only seen 2 Calne cosplayers. One was on stilts and really big, but she looked so...helpless? As in, you could see that she couldn't move and had a hard time wearing the costume, although the costume was really impressive and big! The other one didn't have stilts, but wore dark socks and on those socks attached were the mechanical legs. It wasn't 100% accurate, but she could walk around in it and looked more happy overall! xD

Oh I'm feeling the space constraints too. I have 3 display cases but I still definitely need to make more room, it's terrible!
Next they'll be making figures for Slayers!!!
ha ha no that'll never happen *cries*
I work for the GUVERMENT so that means that even if I spend some time messing around I still accomplish more per day that most people in my department. I do very exciting work involving taxes. I also have like 0 supervision but I don't know that anyone would care too much if they did see me.
He does such amazing work! The first time I saw one of his PVs I was absolutely transfixed by how grotesque it all was but it was so compelling and I immediately went to find everything else he'd done. I think maybe he's the one doing the sculpts for the figures too? I know he does sculpting in traditional media, casting them in resin I think?
Oh, that figure is cute! I like the xmas-y version a bit more just because of the red. You're right that she'd be good to display at other times of year because she doesn't scream "Christmas" so much as just fit with an xmas atmosphere if desired.

Idk, but the few times when I have a day off and am behind the computer, almost everyone seems to disappear! xD

Ah, this is currently the state of my collection (as the appartment where I live in right now only has space for 2 detolfs max., I can't wait to live in a bigger place again):

Well there's a lot of old stuff from Slayers that you could try to hunt down. :)

Oh man, seems like it's the same in every country. Here in the Netherlands I also know from a few people about government jobs and how everybody is so lazy. Even if you come in as a motivated and hard worker, you get lazy over time (at least, that's what I hear around me, hopefully no offence taken from you :P). Man, I wish I could get a government job. :P Doing 2-3 hours of work a day and spend the rest on browsing the internet and writing reviews. xD

The first time I found out about Deino was when I was randomly listening to music on Youtube and found out about Machine Muzik:

I immideatly loved the designs and wanted to learn more! Shortly after that the first Calne figures were announced and I found out about them through MFC, so I was quite "late" with discovering Deino's work. Anyway, I love every bit of it: it's creepy and it's beautiful. A crazy cosplay dream of mine would be to make a costume of Calne Ca's Nurse Cosplay. I really hate long wigs though, so that would be a problem. xD

Deino does indeed quite some sculpting work, but I know from the previous Calne figures they were made by ENCYCLOPEDIA #9652 , so I guess it's better to wait what will be added to the database entry. :)

I especially like that happy-ball-animal that is underneath the gift. :3 And man, now you're making me rethink about it while I just removed her from my wishlist a few months ago! xD

When I first got more money-related + personal freedom (when I moved out of my parents' house) my collection exploded in size. After some years like that I thought "oh help I have too much" and started putting up a lot for trading/sales too. So with me it's not even the money, it's just that I have way too much, haha!
I don't know much about Yu Yu Hakusho, but I think their figures look good! :) It's a bit the same as YGO: an very old series with mainly a male cast gets figures. Huh, what? Well, Kotobukiya just did!
Haha, omg, I wish I could have a job again where I could spend a part of my day being on websites and doing own stuff, haha! And ahh yes, I really love Deino's work too. Also his more other and not necesserily Calne-related work that's in his portfolio. Deino's doujinshi's and other things seem to be quite hard to find, so the figures are a good way of supporting his work I think! Ahhhh, now I'm also just thinking of buying these new figures to support his art! xD
Well I have been on the fence very long about ITEM #54019 and her less Christmas-y version ITEM #91542 because I thought she was very Christmas-like, but also still fitting to display even after the holidays. Although now even years later, I still don't have anything that's specific to a holiday. I'm not sure what I would do with a holiday-themed figure, though. It would be weird to always have them on display, but it would be a shame to store them for 11 of the 12 months in a year.

I've actually preordered more in the last year but that's because I finally got a job so I can actually afford it, lol. I'll be selling some stuff soon to make room for the new things but otherwise it's nice to have the money for most of the things I want the most.
I think they are really true to the art style and that's always good. Their Yu Yu Hakusho figures also look great I think. My friend who's a big fan says they're perfect.
you don't even know like I am flailing around in my office (I'm at work lol) and stifling this little "eeeeee" noise, it's very undignified. Bacterial Contamination version is a 100% certainty, human-like is high up there too really, I just love Deino's work so much. Magnificently creepy and somehow beautiful.
Yeah that's the trouble with holiday themed releases. Plus, I wouldn't buy any xmas figures just because it'd feel weird to display them all year round but it'd be sad to display them only for a month or so a year. Some other holidays like a Halloweeny sort of figure would be different but xmas stuff belongs only around xmas, I feel.
