2014: My Year in Loot2014: My Year in Loot

2013 BLOG #12032 | 2012 BLOG #5993

So, this is my third year doing a roundup of all the geeky crap I bought or was given over the course of the year. This time, my post was a little late since I was unable to finish taking December loot shots until today. Anyway, let's get started!

As in previous years, I spent too much money. I also tried out a lot of new manga series, many of which I ended up following, so expect a lot of books ahead...

------------

January

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/R_Kasahara1391569542.jpeg
Started off the year with a little bit of everything! The highlight here is Udon's long-awaited English reprint of The Eyes of Bayonetta. True Blue..., the second album by Bemani artist dj TAKA, is great as well.

------------

February

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/R_Kasahara1394249545.jpeg
February's loot shot is so large in part thanks to SPIZZY's doujin shop + Surugaya group orders (which she's no longer doing, both unfortunately and understandably). I also got a fair number of figures, including the Etna and Flonne Nendos which I later reviewed here: BLOG #14679

There's also the usual manga, a Club Nintendo reward, and the US special edition of Bravely Default. It arrived in great condition, but Amazon once again shipped a boxed 3DS game to me in a bubble mailer, so that's when I started exploring other options for similar releases in the future.

------------

March

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/R_Kasahara1397237829.jpeg

March was pretty typical, but figure-wise, the mix of a long-wanted Flonne and a set of Tamashii Stages was somewhat odd.

This was also the month where 2014's adventures in trying out new manga began. The Tezuka stuff was all right, as was the Est Em book, but I didn't like Watamote much at all-- the main character came across more sad than funny to me. If I was younger, perhaps it would've appealed to me a bit more. Also, I still don't like how Yen Press translates sound effects :P

------------

April

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/R_Kasahara1398963685.jpeg
I finally played Persona 4 this year and loved it, which is why Pimp Daddy Teddie and Persona 4 Arena are in April's loot. I also picked up the Wii version of Sonic Unleashed, not knowing at the time that the PS3/360 versions are quite different. Whoops. Steins;Gate had its moments but was something of a letdown, given all the hype, but I'm glad that such an important visual novel was released in English all the same. Finally, there's more new manga here in the form of the first volume of What Did You Eat Yesterday?, but Fumi Yoshinaga is one of my favorite mangaka, so I was already looking forward to it (and yes, it's as good as I expected).

------------

May

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/R_Kasahara1401735885.jpeg
Returning to loot shots with lots of goodies, May brought my major plushie pickup of the year, the "B" version of Action Kirby, which I also reviewed blog/15266&.... Action figures, a bunch more manga, a couple of artbooks… not much else to say about this batch except that figma Indy turned out pretty good and Insufficient Direction is silly and super-geeky. Also, I haven't set up that new display case yet >_>;

June

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/R_Kasahara1403557551.jpeg

Here's where, for the first time in 2014, I found a longer manga series that I ended up really enjoying: Magi. Usually with manga, if I find a first volume to be promising, I pick up the second one; if it doesn't hook me after that, I'm done. Golgo 13 ended up not passing this test, but Magi did, and my husband and I are now nine volumes in. It's not on the same level as Fullmetal Alchemist, but if you loved that series and are looking for another good shonen epic, Magi is worth checking out.

Oh, and I finally got Sgt. Frog vol. 21, which I didn't know had been printed in English after all! Tokyopop had shut down its US publishing operations right before it was due out in bookstores, so I had given up, but when this turned up on a random Right Stuf search, it made my week. Unfortunately, there were a couple of disappointments this month as well, as Ken Sugimori Works wasn't quite what I expected and Gyakuten Saiban Piano Album wasn't very good at all.

July

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/R_Kasahara1406850056.jpeg
Last summer's loot hauls were on the crazy huge side, and this year's seemed only slightly more restrained. There's a pile of CDs and other goodies from Amazon JP, figma Eren, even more manga (continued on with Monster as I thought I would, dropped Jojo), that awesome Utena PM figure, and some other stuff, including one of the two best deals I got all year: Creid by Yasunori Mitsuda, on clearance at the San Francisco Kinokuniya for $2.99 plus tax!

------------

August

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/R_Kasahara1409207301.jpeg

August is this year's Winter WonFes loot month, obviously, and I also got my first FromJapan proxy order of FFVII doujinshi. Ignore the Knights of Sidonia volume in the manga pile there; that's my husband's, and it somehow slipped in here by accident. As for the other manga, I tried Nisekoi and My Love Story!!, both of which I decided to stick with after their vol. 2s (and the former has since become a big favorite of my husband's), but dropped Otomen and Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin after giving them similar chances. Barefoot Gen is a picked-up-again-after-a-long-time type of series (same with Parasyte, which is coming up later), and the rest are one-shots or stuff I was already devoted to.

Late August and early September also brought another trip to PAX Prime, though we didn't go crazy with loot this time - PICTURE #1096880

September

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/R_Kasahara1412097520.jpeg
Oreimo figures! Haven't seen those in awhile :P There's also more manga, more doujinshi, more figures, some Western comics(!), and my first Parfom, Aegis, who turned out pretty well. This new figure line isn't perfect, but it's definitely one to watch, and I'm hoping Parfom Labrys goes up for preorder later this year. There's also a rare purchase for me here: a scaled figure. It's Yotsuba, though, and based on a great-looking garage kit, so I couldn't pass her up.

October

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/R_Kasahara1415209030.jpeg

Here's where the book buying really starts to get crazy. There's two Kickstarter rewards here (the Anime News Nina book [with alternate Ultimate Mop Daisuke slipcover in full effect] and the first Fantagraphics Don Rosa Duck collection, which has a nameplate signed by the man himself!). I also had to re-buy volumes 2 and 3 of Gen, since my old ones turned out to be heavily abridged and the current edition is uncut. As for the new-to-me manga, there's World Trigger and Ajin (passed the Vol. 2 Test), D-Frag (putting on hold for now), and a complete omnibus of Legal Drug (I really, really think I've outgrown most CLAMP series…).

------------

November

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/R_Kasahara1417121724.jpeg
My other "small" loot shot this year. Vocarock was the second amazing CD deal I got this year-- already deeply discounted at CDJapan, thanks to the points I'd accumulated, I only paid 267 yen total for the CD and shipping!

I rebought the first Don Rosa Library book along with the second in box set form, so that my signed edition could be safely stored away. Also, new manga notes: Prophecy is all right, and it's only three volumes long, so I'm sticking with it to the end.

Oh, and for Persona Q, I ordered the Wild Cards edition from both Amazon and Best Buy. Amazon shipped it in a box(!), but the Best Buy copy arrived in better overall condition, so that's the one I kept. +1 for Best Buy.

The last month of the year rolled around with its deadly, deadly Right Stuf and Steam sales. As for new ongoing manga, I very much enjoyed both first volumes of Master Keaton and Assassination Classroom and am looking forward to reading more of both series this year.Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call was my one major physical Black Friday purchase, and the two figures I received are both nice releases to end the year with. I was, however, annoyed that the US print release of the Eva manga's final volume was delayed until February, and as such, I haven't even opened the Japanese edition yet.

There's also my Secret Santa gift! MADDYNAMITE was my Santa, and along with candy, stickers, and other goodies, she sculpted my favorite Pokemon, Absol! As you can imagine, I thought this was a pretty special gift. Unfortunately, he suffered some damage as I unpacked him, but I managed to fix him up after the New Year. My schedule's going to be a little odd this year, so I don't know if I'll be able participate in the next MFC Secret Santa, though I would like to-- they're a lot of fun <3

Finally, there's some other Christmas gifts, most of which are from my husband. As far as I know, there's no Harvest Moon-related interviews in the book, but maybe in Vol. 2?

Some notes:

Near-grails and other long-coveted items I finally obtained in 2014:
- The Ghost Trick OST (ITEM #187852)
- Sgt. Frog (Keroro Gunsou) vol. 21
- The last three "Vincent-kun" doujinshi that I needed for a complete set, as recounted here: BLOG #16714
- Flonne 1/8 scaled figure (ITEM #315), from a fellow MFC member
- English-language versions of Bravely Default and Fantasy Life (neither of which I've gotten around to playing yet <_<;;;)

My favorite 2014 figure releases:
There were a lot of good figures that came out this past year, but my top picks (in no particular order) are:
- figma Indiana Jones (ITEM #166945)
- Utena Tenjou PM Figure (ITEM #183793)
- Parfom Aegis (ITEM #144404)
- S.H.Figuarts Sailor Jupiter (ITEM #156677)
- Nendoroid Link (ITEM #166946)

Goals for 2015:
- Start less new manga series. I tried a lot of new series in 2014, most of which I ended up loving. Because of that, I'm now actively reading nearly twenty titles, which is starting to get overwhelming. Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches is the only new one I plan to try this year, unless one of the items on my licensing wish list (Silver Spoon most of all) gets picked up for an English-language release.
- Assemble some plamo. I've amassed a small stack of plastic model kits, but haven't actually put any of them together. Here's hoping that this is the year that changes.

That's pretty much it, actually >_>; Maybe I'll come up with some more later.

Happy New Year, and hold on to your wallets-- even with the favorable exchange rates, no doubt 2015 will be another expensive one!

Thanks for replying back, and your review on the book was very informative. The lack of pokemon content is disappointing so I'll probably pass in hopes there will make one in the future. Thank you so much again, it was awesome seeing your past loots! I admire your wonderful taste in anime/games/music. XD

sandigabi (Il y a 3 ans) #2601956Omg for that Yami no Matsuei CD. I got that so many years ago and it made my nostalgia rise up when I saw it in your loot. It's one of my fav OSTs!

Fun seeing your collection grow per month. Nice!

I got that CD at the same time as the Mitsuda one-- same clearance price, too. Love that anime ^_^ Thanks for your comment!

Suppi12 (Il y a 3 ans) #2601960Curious on why the Ken Sugimori Works was disappointing? Was there not much art/contents? :O
You can see my in-depth thoughts on it on the item's page: ITEM #210492. Basically, there's a lot of Quinty comics, a fair amount of other old Game Freak stuff, and very little Pokemon :/

Karuu (Il y a 3 ans) #2597329I'm so jealous of that Action Kirby plush! They're so expensive now :/ Nice loots!
Thanks! And yeah on their current price… I got lucky with the "B" Action Kirby and still want the "A" one ;_;

DBZfantomStrikR (Il y a 3 ans) #2597344Holy daaaamnn you ordered alot of mangas this year O.O. I very rarely, and I mean very rarely, read mangas as I don't like to read books in general, but yea reading 20 titles does seem overwhelming.
I devour manga, and read the stuff much more than I watch anime, but even this is starting to become a bit much for me. There's just so many good manga series that have been coming out recently, especially shounen ones.

aweofshe (Il y a 3 ans) #2597353I'm interested in that T case. How much does it cost to ship? I've got a lot of little trading figures and am always looking for display options.
I got it from HLJ combined with some other stuff, which is probably the best way to go. According to them, shipping by Unreg. SAL for just one of these is 1,480 yen.

There are a few different styles of T Case which might be cheaper to ship www.hlj.com/scr.... AmiAmi slist.amiami.co... and Hobby Search www.1999.co.jp/... carry them as well, if you prefer either of those two stores.

satsuyurami (Il y a 3 ans) #2597371That Harvest Moon plush. I want to hug that cow plush.maddynamite (Il y a 3 ans) #2601594Is that a Ghost Trick soundtrack? Neat-o! GT is such a great, underrated game. How is the album? Also, I love the Harvest Moon chick plush :3
When I found out about those plush, I was like "I have to have these" and asked my husband for them for Christmas. They're bigger than I expected, though o_o;

And yep, that is the Ghost Trick OST. If you remember the music from that game, the OST is as good as you'd expect, but it's very hard to find-- to give you some idea, it was more expensive than the limited-edition version of the Final Fantasy VII OST which is in that same loot shot (they both came from Surugaya).

À propos de ce blog

I don't write blog posts here as often as I should, but at least I'm writing at all!

Posts here generally concern figures and other collectables. For reviews, I often like to highlight items which may have gone overlooked, or are otherwise interesting. In general, I strive for high-quality posts above all else.

I also maintain a blog here which is mostly about video games, and sometimes about manga and anime.
