Old vs. New Momohime :DOld vs. New Momohime :DAsk MFC

Are you people excited about the new Momohime?! I'm sure a lot of people at least know about the re-release of one of the most popular figures on MFC. And both of them are really lovely figures, aren't they? I was so happy when I was able to order it without having to subject my wallet to the aftermarket prices of the old Momohime :D

I'm guessing a lot of you (including me!) have been comparing the pictures of the old Momohime with the new one, and I have been reading comments on what people think about them and which one they prefer.

BUT!

I am really curious about which one would be the victor in a head to head battle :D

Definitely the new one, her painting indeed comes together better and her eyes are not so flat looking after such nice and soft framing and soft pupil, she looks mature now. I did not understand the popularity of the figure before repainting but now I ordered her in heartbeat. I can't wait to photograph her in sunset! And I want to play the game now too.

the coloration is actually more accurate to the official art on the new one. The Katana isn't, but that changes in game depending anyways.

I love both the new and old one but own the old one so dont plan to get the recolor.

And as a fan of the game i prefer the colors she has in the game

I have the old one and was never overly fond of her, I just love vanillaware games, and that's the only option I had for her. I like the original art for Muramasa, and I feel the changes reflect the things that made me dislike the original. The sculpt wasn't the best reflection of the artwork, but then the painting was the nail in the coffin. The new version has the gloss over the eyes that I like that helps make her feel more like she did initially.

However, I don't like the gloss on the kimono for the new one :-/ I like the bold colors on the original, but the face more on the new one. There is a scene in Muramasa where she is running through a field at sunset, and I think these colors are suitable for that. However when she's in the forest, the original colors make more sense. Color theory, people! LOL

Ideally screw this repainting and give me Kisuke.

From a sculpt point of view, they are nearly identical. The little changes that were made to the new version are nice, but they don't exactly amaze me either (crisper details on the folds on her sleeve, position slightly lower and arguably more natural). Obviously, the paint details in the new version are simply better (because, again, more detailed).

Also noticed that the material used for the water on the base, is transparent instead of a solid painted plastic piece, which is also a nice improvement, but is another little detail that doesn't make a huge difference for me (because is barely noticeable anyways. However I would like to mess around with lights for the new one). Again, the final result is pretty much the same.

And this has probably been said countless times before, but the new Momohime is a nice alternative for those who oculdn't afford or get the first one.

Idk, I can't fully say one is better than the other when there is almost little to no difference for me. Still, If I had to choose I would probably get the new one first over the old one. Even If the differences are really small, I actually dig this new colouring Alter is been using with both Momo and their Velvet.

I like it don't get me wrong but I find the outstanding popularity of it kinda confusing.
To answer your actual question, I think both the new/old are equally nice, though I'm kinda partial to this one ITEM #27637 cause the colours are more vibrant IMHO. (Side note: I am colourblind so I can't really tell if they are)

Muramasa is what one would consider a 'cult classic'. It's a fun and gorgeous action side scroller from VanillaWare and isn't something that you would expect figures from, let alone incredibly high quality sculpts from Alter.

Everyone I know that has played it has nothing but good things to say about it, despite the fact that you can beat the game in under 8 hours. (Being a Wii exclusive only helped further the cult classic status, and it was later ported to the Vita as well)

And there is of course, the whole 'waifu' status of Momohime- can't ever ignore THAT. But in all seriousness, despite it not being the most interesting or dynamic figure out there, it's incredibly well done. It's such a beautiful figure you see people who have never heard of the game wanting her, and willing to pay the aftermarket prices to boot.

I would go into more detail but I don't want to accidentally spoil the game for you in case you were interested in playing it- hope that all over the place explanation helps somewhat!

The new Momohime (because the new version is easier to get) ^-^
I would have loved to obtain any one of the versions but since the first release is a a bit more expensive and more difficult to obtain at the moment, I decided to go for the new version. (✿◕ ‿ ◕✿) Thank you Alter for this re-release!

I was kinda baffled that they were releasing this with a new color scheme, but now that Ive seen it, I ordered it. I think the new colors are much more pleasing as well as the changes to the sculpt. I also think the colors give it way more life than the previous version.
Someone mentioned this figure:ITEM #236248 While the sculpt is fantastic; from what Ive seen, the end result did not live up to the prototype.
Having watched Kill la Kill and played Muramasa, Momohime, I think, is more appealing to a broader audience(people interested in samurai, swords, cute girls, kimono, etc.). She also has a more dynamic pose. Satsuki, while having a unique face, doesnt have a very dynamic pose as well as being limited in colors.

The fact that the new one will have smooth skin finish, pearl finish on kimono, and inevitably a clear plastic box means it's already infinitely better than the old one

I think this is a good question. The thing is, it doesn't have to be the best sculpt (which is why many others are up there, too), it just has to have a combination of things going for it which make it good enough to draw attention.
I know a number of people who haven't the slightest clue where she is from, but the assortment of appealing (water-looking) colors (with so many that would seem to clash, but don't), the weightlessness of her pose, distinct Japanese references and overall presence of this piece, come together to capture the eye/imagination in ways that others can't. Highly subjective? Sure, but it's interesting, because most people see it and want to know more about her. Just like the art in the games, people seem to know a good thing when they see it.
I have that Satsuki figure you're referring to, and while she's highly detailed and awesome (bold and defiant!), it's very stoic and not as vivid as Momohime. Like many of my other figures, it works with two primary colors which define the figure, but that's very safe design. Momohime has like three primary colors and a ton of accent colors...just gorgeous.

This is a very interesting and well thought out reply, thank you! Very insightful :D
