Hello everyone! This is my first time reviewing a figure, so please be gentle with me and what better to pick than the newly released Code Geass 1/8 scale of Kururugi Suzaku & Lelouch Lamperouge by MegaHouse! The sculpt is based off a CLAMP illustration. If you haven't watched Code Geass, now is the perfect time to start as a third season is coming soon after all these years! The G.E.M Line is one of my favourite series, I love these characters, so I had high expectations which were *mostly* met!
Wow, what did the box do to you, you may ask? In my humble opinion, this is THE FLIMSIEST BOX in my ENTIRE COLLECTION. Seriously, this absolutely cannot be overstated. The cardboard is only 1mm thick. It also has no plastic window to see the figure, and in my experience when this is the case eg ITEM #287808 the box is usually very sturdy. This is the inside and the bottom with the blister removed. Nothing, not even a standout sheet so you can display them with the wings that were so important to the source material picture/1754145...
That being said, the outside is beautifully done.
The top has some lovely detailing, and has a suitable royal feeling to it for a Voir le spoilerCacher le spoilerKnight and his King
Look at that lovely big scratch on my brand new box. This is why I usually buy pre owned, because I have the worst luck when it comes to new items. No idea how it got there with the tissue paper and MegaTrea Shop box to protect it. I like how each side has a picture of one of the boys.
Nice side view of the boys on the back, with all the usual information. The bottom of the box is completely black.
Even with these instructions, it still took me almost three hours to assemble this figure. This may just be me being slow, though. Others have also complained of the difficulty of assembly, but even after translating the text it only says things along the lines of "Attach Suzaku head to body" It would have really helped if it was in colour, but that's obviously too much to ask of a 27,000 yen figure. Also, I had to bend Lelouch's leg apart a bit to get him firmly on his pole. In the future I'd recommend taking off his back leg first. He also won't go quite all the way onto his posts. I dread dissembling them when I move home from uni because to pull off their heads without breaking the chain I'd probably need anouther set of hands... A problem for future me.
The blister is nice and compact, with tape holding it together.
I was suprised to find the heads were detatchable, although in hindsight I probably should have seen it coming. If you know me, you’ll know I absolutely LOVE head swap shenanigans. being careful not to damage them of course Scales are harder to have fun "playing" with than nendoroids and figmas, but seeing heads on different bodies always make me laugh. These are all my figures who have sported different heads to their own off the top of my head Pun not on purpose Voir le spoilerCacher le spoilerITEM #109860
Suzaku’s neck hole is narrower than Lelouch's though, so less fun to be had there.
Bonus points if the head stays on without you having to hold it there Their heads are absolutely beautiful. No complaints here. The lip gloss is a nice touch. The earring chain is made of real metal. There's a few small plastic blobs on the top bits, but nothing major. It's also sturdy enough that you can hold only one head and the chain will support the other. Not that I recommend this of course, but it happened to me a few times during assembly. Unfortunately the heads require a LOT of force to go in properly, and even then there is still a really obvious gap when viewed from above, especially with Suzaku. Hair shading is nice, and the ends are not as deadly pointy as ITEM #166704.
Base 7/10 The details are all slightly raised, not just painted on. It's the right height too, at approx 1 cm. The circular shape doesn't draw attention away from the figures. The surface is shiny too
The bottom has copyright details and a few support lines. I would have rated it higher, except mine came with several paint splotches which is a little annoying
What can I say? They look great from every angle! Lelouch is posing a little differently to Suzaku which helps with the basic standing poses.
Sorry about the backdrop, becuase of their different colour schemes I couldn't decide whether they looked better with white or black backgrounds so I kind of did both
Sculpting 10/10 The sculptor for this figure also did the sculpt for my favourite figure of all time ITEM #518142 and honestly they did an amazing job in both cases. I love you Imai Yuu! They've only done this, Lavi and ITEM #520669 but they should do more, they're sooo good at sculpting! All the details are absolutely on point. Extra points for all the frills! My only nitpick is Lelouch's pinky finger which is too skinny at the top and thus looks quite weird.
Also, I'm not sure exactly what the cords are made off, but they have the same consistency as string and thus I had to use tags to try and get them to sit the same way as in the stock images, with mixed results.
Painting is mostly good. Some of the line work is quite sloppy though, with a few cases of paint being in places it wasn't supposed to be
Most of the reviews I've read have panty shots, so here's one of Lelouch. Voir le spoilerCacher le spoiler Not much to see, lol!
Overall Thoughts and Enjoyment 9.5/10
This is definitely one of the highlights of my collection. I've been awaiting this day since this figure was announced, and I held off all the other scales of these characters for this, although I'm now tempted to get more scales since this one is very nice. I know of the circa 150 people on mfc who ordered this, most were very upset that the wings in the illustration were not included. I totally understand this, however personally I do not mind as I prefer more realistically styled wings. The rest of the piece totally suits my aesthetic though! At the time of writing, they are still available for their retail price, however being limited and exclusive I will be surprised if their price doesn't rise soon. However, 27,000 yen is quite steep.
After shipping, it cost me 343.60 aud from Nippon Yassan www.nippon-yasa.... That's around 171 per figure. While Lelouch is worth that price to me, I think Suzaku doesn't quite measure up. Because his outfit is mostly white, the layering effect of his petticoat thing is almost lost. I would have prefered it to be gold, honestly, if only to up the contrast.
Interesting fact; Lelouch needs the base to stand up, but Suzaku can stand stable and fine by himself. I wonder what that says about their relationship. Anyway, overall despite the price which could definitely be more in the 25,000 range, I would still recommend them. I've found them a good spot in my detolf, but they look good from neutral angles, above and below, which is unusual. Also, since they are standing back to back I wouldn't be surprised by paint transfers in the future.
I can't afford EMS shipping in general, so this is the first time I've been the first to review something! Usually I'm beaten to the punch and then I lose motivation. Thanks so much for reading! I really appreciate it! Please comment any tips for next time/and or your thoughts on this figure! Also please forgive my phone camera, it's alright in general but I don't have anything better right nowITEM #574524
