Shirahoshi The Grand Line Ladies Special, BanprestoShirahoshi The Grand Line Ladies Special, BanprestoReview

This figure collecting hobby turns into a habit really quickly, perhaps before anyone fully realizes that a change has taken place. It could start very innocently: seeing a figure at a Con that catches your eye. Then, you find a company that has a style that resonates with your own. Next thing you know, your picking up figures for series that you've watched/are watching, until it snowballs into the madness that is completionism and boom! You're a full blown figure collector. Or something like this.

I can say with a modicum of pride that I'm nowhere near the latter of the scale, but I'm starting to see some early signs. Started watching One Piece again a number of months ago: hitting the fast forward to the Fish Man Island episodes because a certian POP caught my fancy and I wanted to know the character more. That POP was Shirahoshi, and while I'm still thrilled with the fact that I even got her (thanks again Raithos), earlier this week I found an EMS slip in the mailbox as another Shirahoshi had arrived and was ready to be picked up. A week earlier I had seen the Banpresto Grand Line Ladies Special online and had ordered her on a whim.

This one isn't so much a formal review per se, as much as a comparison between these two versions of Shirahoshi. This makes it a battle royale! X3

Shirahoshi POP vs. Shirahoshi, GLL!

Boxes

My beloved husband picked up the GLL from the post office, and came home looking slightly puzzled. (He had picked up the POP as well so he's seen his fair share of boxes.) "I wasn't expecting the box to be so small." How much smaller?

Much smaller. Comparison of the two, beside their boxes.

The POP box was HUGE! Some more comparisons.

So how did they cram a mermaid that isn't all that much smaller than her POP counterpart into such a compact box? Why simple! Some assembly required! XD

So. At this point you might now be asking: why the second Shirahoshi, Neko, especially since you already have the "superior version"? That would be a very good question. The POP really needs no explanation since I've already taken many pictures of her.

I could take pictures of this figure ALL DAY.

What initially had me curious about the GLL version...was her softer paint colors, which are probably closer to the manga version. Once I got her, I was very happily surprised as to how well she was sculpted and the color scheme as well.

Underneath the hair, which is helf up by a clear piece of coral that blends in well the the overall design.

Initially, I was also looking at the Figuarts version of her..but no matter how much I looked at it, something just seemed a little off about that particular one. Once I got this one, I figured out what it was that was bothering me: the sculpting on the Figuarts version didn't look natural to me. Case in point: ITEM #91641 Not sure if anyone else feels the same way, but at least to me, this one looks like a human torso on a fish bottom. With the GLL version, the two are blended together to look much more believable.

The hands are also well sculpted and delicate.

There are some minor differences between the two. The fins, for instance.

The POP

The GLL, with one of the few noticable flaws...the place where the tail is connected to the rest of her body.

Conclusion

So...which version excels over the other? While the detailing and color on the POP do set it aside as the elite figure...the GLL verion has plenty of charm. Interestingly, my husband "who doesn't like One Pice but likes certian characters" prefers the GLL to the POP. He's a fan of the softer colors, which means that when this item gets here, he's automatically stolen it. T_T ITEM #98951

I hear ya, I haven't been interested in One Piece in years, but when I saw the POP Shirahoshi, I knew I had to have her. I was looking at the GLL Shirahoshi a week ago on Mandarake, but managed to grab the POP version instead. Now seeing actual pictures of the GLL version, I may have to get her as well.

The GLL definitely does capture Shirahoshi better, but I can't help but think that her proportions look a bit off (looking at the official photos). The GLL's softer colors do look great though. If only the POP Shirahoshi had exchangeable faceplates with an expression like the GLL one, or even the Figuarts one...

Love your reviews and the GLL one is BEAUTIFUL i actually think i like it better and the fact that if you want you could display her with out her hair up is amazing. Great review love it. Nice to see the comparison as well.

Again, it was a very nice surprise for us as well. Minor flaws aside, gorgeous.
