NegaThere never was many surprises of this magnitude since Nendoroid Korra.

Korra was a big mess though and an overall mistake. It was half-assed with bare-bones accessories, most of which only got added to it after a large outcry from fans at just how bad it was. It was obvious the Nendoroid was only made to shut up western fans who'd been begging for Last Airbender Nendoroids. Especially since the series flopped in Japan and their dub was cancelled halfway through Last Airbender's second season, so they'd have never even seen Korra's series.

It was a surprise at its initial announcement, but when it went up turned into a quick flop with nothing but backlash. It really wasn't a game changer and is probably more something GSC regrets and won't touch again.

ponnie (Il y a 4 mois) #45933765As much as I know about sales, as long as it sells like hot pies, no one gives a damn about 'variety'.
No big figure maker will go against demand and waste money releasing niche stuff for 'variety' only. Even if they do pet projects like this they have to have an extra budget which can be obtained only by selling stuff in demand.
Also, being in high demand is not a problem. Some things sell, some things doesn't. I really don't get why this community tends to treat popular stuff like a problem. People, it's THE FUEL OF OUR HOBBY.
For niche stuff there are garage kits and believe me this database barely covers 20% of what actually gets sold each wonfes. But getting those is not a two-click action, like with any niche and shadowy stuff. Not that it's entirely impossible, though.

The issue is that people feel Fate is saturating the market, specially for people that don't like fate (I like it to be clear) and as such it feels like the only thing being made is Fate figures, also, lack of variety (or a perceived lack of it) is actually quite bad for an industry of this type.

I am okay with lots of Fate figures being made but I would not mind it if a bit less fate figures were made and we got some other popular yet not that popular franchises instead

EDIT: Not sure I am making sense here I am quite sleepy after all

ponnie (Il y a 4 mois) #45824061What's the problem with Fate? It's a nice game and nice figures..
Not to mention that figure market is still pretty much Japan-oriented so no wonder we get very few western figures as nendo or figmas. Fate is bigger there, end of story.

    ShaoMay (Il y a 4 mois) #45858894You know what, I love it.
Not that I like PUBG (Never played it and just seeing it reinforce my idea that is it not for me.)
I love it because I show us more that once again, GSC is going international. Maybe being a sort of rival to Funko Pop? So there is hope for even more character that I would never have hoped before.
I'm probably delusinal, but the first huge thing from GSC for me was when they started to release Nintendo Figures, then Overwatch. Now I hope to see even more kind of figure that are not anime related. Video games are a HUGE market and having a good figure maker into the mix can only mean good in my book. Now GSC, give me my Castlevania,Mass Effect,Nier and whatever other games you got the licencing rights GSC!

I agree completely! No matter how random or weird GSC's international choices are, I love them because they're just that! It's so great to see them getting into Western titles and I hope it continues in the years to come. Definitely agree about Castlevania, we can only hope lol.

Well, like I said on the item page I'd love to see more games get nendos, so I'd be all for more of them. But I get the feeling that some of the other commentors are right and this was more of a promotional stunt that the PUBG team wanted. So it's a little frustrating to see this pop up out of nowhere with a prototype while we're still waiting for their other figures to be completed, especially since they have figures from other games that are supposedly still in the works with no updates for one or two years. I also just don't see this particular figure selling well because I doubt its main fanbase would be willing to put $40+ on a chibi figure, so it'll probably bin pretty hard. If it does then I hope that GSC doesn't hesitate to make any future products from non-Japanese games.

That being said I also have to disagree somewhat about Fate being GSC's main priority. There's admittedly a bunch of Fate figures but not nearly the whole cast has been made, and GSC has a ton of other nendos in the works. I think between Disney, Marvel & DC, Harry Potter, Star Wars, some older series like Yotsuba and Gurren Lagann, more male figures in general, and multiple video game series, this is actually the most variety we've seen so far.

This is also not the first non-Japanese game figure they've made so it might not be as huge of a deal as you're making it. We've got the Overwatch line, Kratos from God of War, Nathan Drake from Uncharted, The Witcher, Portal, League of Legends, Kings of Glory, and Love and Producer. So there's actually quite a few.

Elise_Grimwald (Il y a 4 mois) #45891393I want to know the same thing. It seems that lately, Fate is getting a lot of undeserved hate (I saw someone claim EVERY character from Fate gets figures.. Uh huh. Fate has like 100+ characters, with only like 10 that get figures)). Just because it's getting figures instead of what whoever the poster (in ALL cases) wants doesn't make it bad.
And that is 100% it, people just don't seem to get that these companies.. just sadly don't care about their Western market. If they did, they'd have a Guzma nendoroid by now, or a Chise one (those are what I see requested the most). Japan must not have interest. They'd also have Five Nights at Freddy's figures, and Fortnite. While nendo collectors don't really want them (I saw LOTS of comments going 'OH NO, NOT THAT TOO!', in regards to Fortnite), the masses would. And we'd be seeing Disney nendos every day (pretty much). They also wouldn't be making these unreleased in the US mobile game nendos, or those ones based on Japanese celebrities.
I'm not 100% sure WHY they chose PUBG, but they did, probably based on demand in Japan. I know from what I've seen so far, nendo collectors here HATE it. I'm among those that didn't want to see it. I'm not too fond of the idea of them doing nothing but the anime airing this season, and figures based on franchises we see in Walmart, and that's more and more of what they're doing. This is just cementing it. :/.

When it comes to Guzma the issue is Japan not caring much for figures of villains outside of very rare exceptions like the ones from long lasting shonen anime or ones that are "waifus" like Akane from SSSS.Gridman. Any time Bandai makes a villain in their Figuarts line they get relegated to the webshop unless it's a character like Broly. It's an absolute nightmare being a Kamen Rider or Ultraman fan.

Heliodora (Il y a 4 mois) #45863123I get that, but godspeed to anyone that loves a game with no story and no distinguishing characters enough to buy a nendoroid of it (I mean, Fortnite managed to push so much merch, maybe they'll do just fine), bloodborne and other series that get the figure treatment usually have at least some kind of story and characters laid out, so even if it's not your character you still feel invested. Even gacha games have the characters present with some quirky lines when you get them/battle or go to a level. I know there's people out there that will buy him, I just don't understand the appeal myself.

Fair point I just see people bring this up from time to time when a game with a playable character that isn't set in stone gets a figure and I think that like I said sometimes the love of a game overrides the need for a connection but you are right in that Bloodborne has story/lore/characters people enjoy like The Doll. Dragon Ball Xenoverse also got the same treatment a while ago but it's default playable character was put into some spin off manga which probably helped justify the Figuarts.

OptimalGorilla (Il y a 4 mois) #45861649Gotta disagree on this though. Just look at the figma Hunter from Bloodborne when the Hunter doesn't have a set in stone look or gender. People just wanted a figure really really badly so they made the look from the box art and that one cinematic and if they did the same thing with the Chosen Undead or whatever the protags from DaS2/3 are called I'd be fine with that too. Sometimes a love of the game overrides the need to be attached to a character on some level.
