This figure is a bit of an odd one for me as I had to get it via a proxy bidder service in Japan, since it was not available for direct pre-order from the United States. So it took a while to get this one in. Also I am not really knowledgeable on the anime series she is from...I only know her vaguely, after visiting the hometown of the series's creator, so forgive me if I get any details wrong.

From the new "Gegege no Kitaro" anime, this is Bandai's HG Girls version of Neko Musume:

Each photo can be clicked on to give a full-size view of the image, even if the image itself doesn't display.

Here's her in the box:

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/ReflexDinobus1552700423.jpeg

Nekomusume (or Neko Musume) comes from the anime series, "Gegege no Kitaro". This version of her is actually from the new series (currently airing), as she looked vastly different in the original series and manga.

This figure comes in a box that has a surprising amount of English on it, for a Japanese exclusive release (as in it wasn't available to order outside of Japan without a proxy bidder; not that it was just made in Japan). But the box does show off all of the necessary information, like the actual figure, the name of the anime, the name of the character, the name of the company and the name of the figure series as well.

This figure was only available on the "Premium Bandai" ordering site, and for a limited time. It did have 3 releases however, with this one from the 1st release (not sure if there is a difference between the releases, though).

Size of the box:

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/ReflexDinobus1552700745.jpeg

The most misleading thing about this figure, overall, is the size of it. The photos (both on the box and on the promotional material for her) made her seem much, much bigger than she actually is. The box is only about 5" tall; which is shown here in comparison to a standard sized Nendoroid box.

Back of the box:

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/ReflexDinobus1552700426.jpeg

There's not a whole lot new on the back of the box...mostly just some more angles to see the figure from as well as the actual Japanese names of all of the information from the front of the box.

Also there are no instructions at all with this figure...but then again, none are really needed, as seen below:

Parts:

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/ReflexDinobus1552700430.jpeg

The figure comes pretty much ready to go in the package, only needing the base and cellphone attached to complete the figure. The cellphone and base are packaged separately from the figure, with the base being outside of the plastic core holding the rest of the figure (taped on the inside).

Accessories:

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/ReflexDinobus1552701328.jpeg

The first accessory with her is the base. The base is really nicely done, with a glossy finish and nicely painted details of the swirl effects and the Japanese text. The only issues with the base are the embossed letters for "HG GIRLS" which can only be seen well with light reflection (maybe some white paint in the embossing would have made them stand out more); and the Japanese text itself. For some reason, only the word "Cat" is written in Japanese (猫) instead of her actual name, Neko Musume / Nekomusume (猫娘)...which I find rather odd.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/ReflexDinobus1552702770.jpeg

The second accessory with her is a cell phone. Normally my photos wouldn't be this low of quality, but this thing is absolutely tiny!! It's 5/8 of an inch tall!

Even when you can see the detail on it without photo distortion, it's nothing special. It just has a very basic, generic cell phone look to it with white areas and black buttons and screen.

Also due to the small size of the phone and figure, it's really difficult to put the phone in her hand.

Out of the box:

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/ReflexDinobus1552700444.jpeg

The first and most prominent thing about this figure is just how different it is from the photos on the box.

Now I am used to figures being different from the promo material and box art, as those are usually taken from either prototypes or hand-painted models long before the production actually begins on the mass-produced product...but this is a whole different level of quality control problem altogether!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/ReflexDinobus1552700447.jpeg

The figure is not even close to the level of detail shown on the box at all! The lines are messy, the sculpting is not crisp and clean at all, and any painted area looks like it was heavily applied; like it was almost poured on.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/ReflexDinobus1552700449.jpeg

All of the exposed skin areas are actually the color of the plastic itself, so there's no paint on them. Because of this, the skin actually looks great! It's really the only area of the figure that does look great, sadly.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/ReflexDinobus1552700452.jpeg

Even areas that would be smooth on any other figure, like the skirt, have blotches and mishaps on it! Shockingly, even areas that aren't showing are really badly painted, like her underwear. Her panties are white, but there are areas where the skin shows through a little bit (because of paint missing).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/ReflexDinobus1552700454.jpeg

The overall sculpt is good and accurate to the character...but it's not well executed in production. Basically it looks more akin to a gashapon figure from a vending machine rather than a "premium" exclusive.

Close-up:

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/ReflexDinobus1552700457.jpeg

Even close-up the figure is not good. The paint on the hair is not smooth, the sculpt is poorly cut, and looks really bad. Even the details on her face are done wrong, with the mouth left unpainted altogether and the eyes looking worse than the box's art shows.

Size comparison:

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/ReflexDinobus1552700611.jpeg

The figure is very tiny, as mentioned before. At just over 4" tall, it's about the size of an actual gashapon (shown here together with another figure of Nekomusume, this one here.

What makes this so ironic is that this one is made by the exact same company (Bandai), is the same size as the other one, and is yet sculpted and painted nearly perfectly! Outside of a small paint mishap on the collar around her neck, the older Bandai figure is actually perfect! So size can not be used as an excuse for the poor quality of this HG Girls figure!

Other versions:

Apparently there is an alternate version of this figure made as well, with her in a wedding dress:

ITEM #801988

I can only imagine that this figure would have the same problems as this one; despite the excellent looking promotional photos.

Overall:

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/ReflexDinobus1552700614.jpeg

Wow...where to start with this figure! This figure is bad...very bad!

There are some good points to the figure, of course. To give the devil his due, the base is really stunning with smooth paint apps, great detailing and embossing and a great sculpt and design! But even that has issues, with it only saying "Neko" instead of "Neko Musume" and the embossed letters being hard to see.

But the rest of the figure is just horrible. The overall sculpt is accurate to the character and looks good, if you view it from very far away. But really, there are so many problems with her. The paint is terribly applied, with mishaps, missing areas, runs, and an unusual thickness to it. The mouth isn't painted (opposed to what was shown with the box art), the eyes look different from the box art, the sculpt wasn't cut out or done properly...I don't know how to explain it, but it seems very rushed and not well executed at all.

Basically, this figure feels like a ripoff, especially for a figure series literally called, "High Grade Girls"! And being from "Premium Bandai" (literally: p-bandai.jp/ite... ), this seems like a joke.

The only saving grace is that the figure is cheap in price, at only 1,800 Yen. But considering that you'll probably need a proxy bidder service or secondary market purchase to get it, you'll probably pay more than that overall. Also since you can get this one here for 1,000 Yen less and have it be a much higher quality figure; it almost makes this one pointless...not to mention that there are several other figures of her out or coming out as well.

Not recommended at all. No play value, only for display.

Maakie (Il y a 1 mois) #58086041Really interesting to see a figure from this line. There are multiple that interest me, but they seem so expensive for their size and from what I saw from user pictures and is proven here, they are rather like glorified trading figures. I will stay away for sure!

Very true; they are quite expensive for their size, and are just basically glorified trading figures. Definitely not worth it in any sense of the word...good choice to stay away, Maakie! Thanks for the comment! ^^

Violette (Il y a 2 mois) #56073220Tyvm for this, was just debating ordering this from Mandarake (2,000 yen atm, already dropped from 2,500 and plenty available), but lol no, if you hadn't stated you ordered from the Bandai's own site I would've been convince that was a bootleg...

Honestly, if I hadn't bought it from Bandai's own site, I would have thought the same! It really is that bad...I could hardly believe it myself when I got the figure in the mail.

I'm glad I can save you some money though by not getting this, Violette! You're welcome, glad my review was helpful! ^^

Guy9394 (Il y a 3 mois) #54386157I feel the same. the 1800+ like 500 yen fee + shipping cost me around 32 USD. this is more expensive than her Glitter and Glamour version (which i loved for their One Piece characters)
If i just happen to walk past a store displaying her. I might be willing to pay 18 USD max while 12 is more reasonable.
However.... i haven't seen a more attractive Neko Musume. This design maximizes 2 selling points: eyes and legs. Can't even see her facial features. Her calves are fuller comparing to every other designs.
In short, i felt so offended when i opened up the package. But after a few weeks, i know i'm glad i got her.

Got to completely agree with you on this one; I feel the same too. I do like the legs on this figure and I would probably have picked it up in a store for the same price, if I didn't get her already like this. I'm going to keep her. Thanks Guy9394! ^^
