Hey, fellow mfc-members and welcome
to another review!

Slowly but surely have trouble coming up with new variations for the “image-heavy”-disclaimer… (๑•﹏•)

So, after growing a bit bored with ITEM #3671 and its lack of vibrant colors and after being disappointed with ITEM #604449 I finally made up my mind to get ITEM #463475. Luckily this Gwendolyn was still largely available in various online shops, meaning I didn’t have to go to great lengths to track her down. I did initially pass on preordering her since she wasn’t unique enough to get her (imo), but since I’m prone to changing my mind here we are now. ┐( ̄ヮ ̄)┌
Anyway, Gwendolyn is one of the main characters from the wonderful Odin Sphere(:Leifthrasir) game by Vanillaware and one of the titular Odin’s daughters. So, without delving into spoiler-territory let’s start with the review.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Gwendolyn arrives in a cardboard box with round/oval windows at the top, front and sides. Interestingly the side and front windows are tinted blue and Gwendolyn’s silver-colored silhouettes on the side windows are a nice addition. The overall design is pretty simple but also stylish, dark blue with silver ornaments adorning the box. Only the back of the box shows a picture of the figure. The usual warnings and such can be found on the bottom.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1552942203.jpeg
The blister, as expected, is standard fare, but the wire holding it together was a bit annoying to get rid of.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
This figure comes in 5 parts: Main figure, base, 2 wings and her psypher spear.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1552943159.jpeg
Assembling everything can be a little challenge so we also get an instruction sheet. Ofc it would be nice if it was in English too instead of just Japanese, but the pictures are plenty helpful w/o text.

As you can see Gwendolyn separates at the waist and the cloth around her waist can be moved around and even removed (though there's no real point removing it).
Detaching the upper body is necessary to attach the wings (it actually went easier than expected). Afterwards the cloth doesn't wobble around anymore, which is really nice.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1552944477.jpeg

You can actually mount her onto the base before inserting the wings, but with the plastic pegs I wouldn't advise you to do that.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1552944480.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1552944484.jpeg

Speaking of the base, that one is a semi-transparent, curved, blueish circle. A light blue wind swirl serves as the sole decoration (apart from the character name written on the base) as well as the means to hold the figure. I can't say I feel particularly safe with the rather short plastic pegs, yet if this Gwendolyn is prone to leaning or breakage remains to be seen.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1552944492.jpeg

Now with that out of the way all that remains is to attach the spear. A fairly simple affair, there's a dent in the cloth where you can just slide the spear upwards until Gwendolyn holds it comfortably. To make it easier the spear head can be detached... though after having done that a few times for this review I feel really annoyed about the whole thing since the head keeps falling off... Also the spear tends to slip down a lot because Gwedolyn's grip isn't exactly tight.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1552944495.jpeg

Otherwise the spear looks fairly good, amply weathered as it's a used weapon and with a nice metallic sheen. The decoration and psypher make a rather great impression as well.

Now for the spin around…

The most impressive thing about this figure are definitely the wings.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
At first I wasn't too fond of Gwendolyn's face here, ofc it's cute and innocent, especially with the slight blush on her cheeks but it's rather expressionless too. Well, what can I say, it grew on me... x3
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1552945407.jpeg

I don't exactly like the bangs and overall definition of her hair tbh. They dont look bad per se, both shading and sculpting are sufficient, yet I prefer the clearly defined strands of hair of ITEM #3671 and the slightly pearly finish.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1552945410.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1552945412.jpeg
No complaint about the tiara or feathery bits though, the paint is clean and the semi-transparent black feathers look great.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Onto her body...
Gwendolyn's golden collar seems a tad uneven in places but otherwise ok. Her body sculpt is fairly good, with nicely defined features like her collarbones and shoulder blades. The rather low-cut top of her battle armor reveals much of her chest for us to admire, while the gold band cuts into her skin ever so sligtly.
The top has a somewhat pearlescent finish to it, giving it a nice look with. Subtle shading addsa bit more depth to the immaculate sculpt (the ruffles and additional layers of cloth in particular).

While Gwendolyn has beautiful and slender fingers with really pretty polished fingernails I really don't like the blotchy look of the ring.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1552947143.jpeg
Her arm guards(?) on the other hand look nice.

Now for those impressive and gorgeous wings...
I really can't describe how much I love these. The color gradients, the vibrant colors, the immaculate sculpt (you can see every feather), the semi-transparent finish at the tips they all look fantastic.

My only complaint would be that you can see the non-feathery bits made to insert into the body a bit (the smooth and polished looking parts). And believe me I double-checked that the wings are attached correctly.

Nothing too remarkable about the skirt-like bit, it looks a bit leathery adorned with silver studs. But I do love the heavy leg armor, the silver bits look really worn and weathered, giving it a realistic impression. The blue parts seem more polished at first glance, but they are weathered as well (especially the sides). The small wings on the sides of her knees look nice and actually kind of cute, albeit a bit more plasticky than say her valkyrie wings.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1552948535.jpeg
The leather parts at the back of her boots crease in a very life-like manner too and fit the overall weathered look of her Gwendolyn's leg armor.

Ofc we have the obligatory view under her skirt as well, though with that "skirt" this doesn't pose a challenge at all.

The tips of her boots aren't too exceptional, yet I have nothing to complain and the color-gradient looks rather pretty imo.

Last but not least some size comparisons…
With her bent pose it's actually hard to pinpoint Gwendolyn's size correctly. She reaches a height of roughly 17cm (top of her head (not tiara) to the tip of her boot) and would need a height of ~19-20 to reach a normal height for female characters. Given her bent pose that's possible I suppose, so let's say Alter delivered her in-scale for now.

Posing her next to ITEM #3671 I feel that this Gwen is a bit smaller overall. Not only in figure height but also in terms face size, body volume and proportions.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1552949330.jpeg

Even next to ITEM #13123 and ITEM #269729 she looks a bit more "petite" than she should imo. At this point I feel safe to assume she's more at the lower end of the 1/8 spectrum.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1552949332.jpeg

ITEM #287683 and ITEM #464791 now make it perfectly clear that this Gwendolyn is by no means anything but a small 1/8 figure.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Well, I can definitely say that I like this figure, my complaints were mostly minor after all. Yet she's still mixed bag for me in some ways. For one there's the size, it's not a major difference compared to Velvet and Mercedes and they do look good together, but I know now and that'll be stuck at the back of my mind. Then there's the lingering fear of the pegs breaking or her leaning (those wings are wonderful, but they're also quite heavy). That cetainly adds a bit of a thrill to the figure I could do without (just using metal rods instead of plastic would feel way more reassuring). And lastly there's her spear...I don't know if others have the same problems of it slipping down at the slightest touch and the tip falling off, but that's the lot I got at least and I sure ain't happy about it.
Since I don't plan to move her around a lot I can deal with that and she's still a stunning figure otherwise, but I can't say I don't feel a bit miffed about it all. She's got the trademark high price-tag Alter attaches to every figure so I honestl expected them to do better than this.

That's it for this review! Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it! ^^
If you don’t mind I’d love some constructive criticism,
but if you don’t feel like posting any your thoughts on the figure are also very welcome. :3

Act (Il y a 23 jours) #55657966Late comment but: I was also kind of ehhh about which Gwnedolyn to get, and while I was enamored of the wings on this, I ultimately decided I couldn't justify the price. Then I saw ITEM #28038 for really cheap and just... took the plunge. I was like 'ahh I may have just wasted money on a shitty old fig from a meh manufacterer' but I've been kind of floored by the quality. ITEM #28038 is absolutely gorgeous with a really interested base and no glaring flaws that I could find. If you're still iffy on this one, I totally recommend it -- seeing userpics of the Alter one does made me glad I didn't spend four times the price to get a worse hair sculpt.
IDK what's up with big-name Gwen figs being so hit or miss. Can I ask what problems you had with ITEM #604449? I really didn't like the broken-back pose but I suspect that's just me.
Can you really say late about a review though? I sure hope it’ll be helpful for people beyond those few hours – 2 days it’s been on the frontpage. Besides I’m always glad about people commenting. :3
I get the feeling about the price, I still feel a little iffy about it but the Yamato Gwendolyn, or better the whole set, just doesn’t appeal to me visually. That’s not to say it’s a bad figure it’s just not my thing (I could’ve saved so much money if it was ;_;). Was Yamato a “meh manufacturer” though? I read somewhere they’ve been bought by Alter and go by Flare nowadays. :O
The pose is actually what I like about the Aquamarine one, but she has a lot of QC issues (glaring seams, like on the spear for example, the kind of stoned looking face, a very subpar and grainy paintjob, the part with the writing under the base falling down by default because it hasn’t been attached properly etc.). It sure felt like a huge waste of money to me, not that my expectations were high, seeing how it’s Aquamarine.

rogue_g (Il y a 28 jours) #55092468From the official photos both Alter 1/8th scales looked really good in their own way, but when posed side by side... this one is just better. Color, sculpt, posing..
Thanks for the review, hope you keep this one long-term despite the small issues!
She is indeed, it'd be sad if she wasn't because the first release of ITEM #3671 is from 2008. x3
I think I will, unless they make a new one in her armor that blows me away. ^^

Jess-chan (Il y a 1 mois) #54852247I never played Odin Sphere but I always thought that she was pretty. The figure is gorgeous!Oh, I'd definitely recommend giving it a try then, not only are the character designs in general very beautiful but it's a really great game story-wise too. :3
She sure looks stunning, but I can't help but be bothered and slightly worried about some things. ^^'

ilasja (Il y a 1 mois) #54778768Thanks for the review! I'm a bit surprised to see the sculpt and paint on her hair so be looking so... messy. Seems like both Alter and Aquamarine struggled with her fringe quite a bit :0Yeah, that surprised me as well, it's not really the same level of messy at the Aquamarine one, but still nothing close to what I expect from Alter. Surprisingly the old Alter figure has the best hair sculpt out of the 3. -_-
