August 2019: Are you in control?August 2019: Are you in control?

Are you in control of your collection or does your collection control you?

Do you have full control over yourself to where this hobby does not dominate your every thought?

This month's collecting cycle has started and I feel no urge whatsoever to get anything for the collection after picking up 4 games for the Video Game collection.

I have looked a few things that I may want but feel no need to get it at all.

I don't even think about figures as much as I used too so now I spend my time relaxing and enjoying the digital media library here rewatching old movies and enjoying a lot of TV shows plus watching Baseball every other night and it feels like this is helping me to enjoy things more and I don't feel possessed or even obsessed to get anything else for this figure collection now.

I see other collectors who continue to collect as if there's no end in sight and those are the ones who talk about "Hey I don't have a Problem." a lot then end up in the old "I think I may have a problem." when they share photos of overcrowded rooms and storage units this makes me think about who has control in those situations.

Right now I'm in control of my collection and it feels great.

What about you?

I am currently and definitely in full control of my collection. I have a set rule about ordering one ready-stock figure at a time - so I won't order another while still awaiting the first one to arrive. The exception is if and only if another figure pops up for a REALLY cheap price.

I have only done 2 pre-orders since I started collecting 2 years ago, which makes it 1 pre-order per year.

I think the control is pretty good so far.

I think when I began collecting figurines I just want to get everything that I liked, but as I mention in previous blogs, the dopamine wears off over time. So to answer the question I would say that my collection did control me into pre-order and making dents into my bank account in the beginning. However as of current circumstance and having more experience in the hobby in general it does not have control over me. I have matured enough to stand firm on what worth spending money on and to take a look that I need to be alive (food) to enjoy this hobby.

I feel a lot of newer collectors go through a phase of falling down the collecting rabbit hole and getting way in over their heads. It's especially really easy these days to get news on upcoming figures with places like MFC or manufacturer's social media sites. Then ordering is easier than ever with all the different shops now. After a while, I think most people taper off their orders and reach a more sane level.

For me personally, I've never let my collection control me. I've always gone for quality over quantity and am generally satisfied with just one high quality figure per character with a few exceptions. I have a very large collection now, but that's only because I've steadily been collecting for over 8 years. I'm still happy to have all of them and wouldn't even dream of selling save for some drastic situation. I don't really think about my upcoming figures that much unless I'm expecting a package or ordering something. I don't follow figure news that closely either and I only use this site to check prices or release dates and read articles. The majority of figures don't interest me, and I usually wait to snipe them in the aftermarket anyway, so I don't tend to pre-order too much. I love watching my savings grow, so that curbs my spending a lot lol. I'm toying with starting a new stock portfolio so that will decrease my figure fund as well.:P

AlienEmoji (Il y a 5 jours) #65498710Your health should always be the focus and I'm glad to hear you are taking the necessary actions to put that in order.
Of course you don't need to take my advice on this because you probably know your own resolve far better than I do, but if it were me in your situation, I would consider taking a break not just from collecting, but from this site (and other sites like it) as a whole, to not expose myself to any possible temptations or further shocks?
Your reaction to prices sounds alarmingly visceral.

I have been considering unplugging from MFC for a while too and I do need to unplug a bit further from figure collecting I'm following a few things on twitter I see the new updates on new figures that are out from stores I use and might be time to unfollow them just these days with the way my reaction to prices just has it to where I'm better off not looking at anime figures.

I'm comfortable collecting action figures since those have been affordable and enjoyable to collect but gotta take my rest and need to clear my head of any remaining thoughts related to collecting while it's been used as a coping mechanism for stress when it starts causing problems gotta rethink things.

Thank goodness there is a large library of books, video games and movies here to watch so shifting to that for a while should work plus focusing on model kits which also helps to relax me when I get to building them.

I think far more about potential custom figures I could make, but as I have pre-orders through to December (and definitely one next May for Sentinel’s Joanna/ Anat) then I kinda have to think of them ready for setting aside funds. Mercifully September only has figma Gridknight so I’ll have more money to save.

TyjosAzari (Il y a 5 jours) #65496400Right now my focus is my health, this hobby isn't good for my health right now and after a scare last night due to a late night heart palpitation I'm at a point I really don't need to collect for a while and after unplugging from things it feels good to not think about expensive figures and look at preorders that would give me a heart attack cause of the crazy prices.
Sticker shock is one thing but some of the figures are too damn expensive.
No more preorders for a while I can tolerate at least 2 right now but with the way my health messes up I can't even guarantee I'll be alive by the time they come out so it's one of those things that makes me unplug from preorders and focus more on rest and relaxation since I have bad anxiety when it comes to health [something happens and I assume the worst] so in order to make my life a little better cutting the collecting hobby down to nothing and focusing more on saving up I will be at my main goals for the year by the end of the year at this rate but gotta make sure I'm healthy enough to enjoy things.

AlienEmoji (Il y a 6 jours) #65476019Congrats on curbing what started to sound a little bit like an addiction lmao
Personally, I don't think I've ever had issues with control. On the one hand, I don't have the money to be able to afford that, and on the other hand, I have high standards for characters and figures, which limits my figure pool quite a lot.
There isn't anything I'm looking to buy at the moment, and aside from a Nendoroid preorder I got for myself as a treat for surviving through an art hell due to con preparations last month, I don't think I bought anything else in the past 2 months or so.
My sights are currently not set on a figure, but on a massive art book instead, so I'm taking it easy and saving up because that tome ain't cheap.

Honestly a few months ago, definitely not in control. I had so many preorders, and so much merch and just stuff- stuff was everywhere. But a while back I realized I was way in the deep end. I sold a ton of figures and asked AmiAmi to cancel a lot of my orders. Now I have a lot less orders and some I still am trying to give preorders away. Now I would say I am mostly in control. I think only collecting stuff I truly like is important and holding back on other things. My main problem now is “Miku” it is really hard to figure out which figures of her I really truly want. I may hold back on making many preorders for her in the future. I feel like I am pretty much full up on Miku. I may stop my preorders for her. I might not even get the 2018 Magical Mirai nendo anymore or even sell my Snow Miku ( I have to think more about her).

Before I discovered prize figures (which I hate before but, learned to appreciate them and again I don't like them anymore for real XD) I was too compulsive whenever I found something I like. Now, I sold all of my prize figures. I only have one left. I start over again with scales because of quality and overall aesthetic. The problem now is the nonstop announcements of PO's. Still I do think about the item first if I really, REALLY want it or not. I can say that I am borderline in-control and not in-control. Somehow this helps me to save money. So, I won't stop collecting because this lump of plastic gives me joy and I habe a ton of wishlist.

Im still new. I managed not to buy this one figure that is way too much for my wallet at the moment. Plus I managed to decrease amount of figures buying per month. At first it was 7 but now down to 3, hope thats a good progress.
So I like to think I am in control. Hopefully I can stop myself from purchasing even more expensive fig in the future
