REVIEW: Aniplex Kato Megumi Kimono Ver.

This figure review will focus on one of my wishlist figures that I had been diligently keeping a lookout for and it is the Kato Megumi kimono figure by Aniplex released last year :)

I own the Utaha (BLOG #42871) and Eriri (BLOG #43099) figures from this line, and had been waiting out for a suitable pricetag for the Megumi one. Surprisingly, her price always remained generally higher than Utaha's (surprising, because I personally consider Utaha's as the best figure out of the three). Eventually I saw her listed preowned for JPY 11,750 on AmiAmi and decided to get her because I was tired of watching and waiting XD She is the most expensive of the three that I had purchased - I got Utaha for JPY 9k+ and Eriri for JPY 8k.

THE BOX: 9/10
THE PACKAGING: 9/10

I really like the box design for this series, the style is very pretty and dainty. It is similar across all three figure boxes - a single front window displaying the figure and flanked by traditional shoji door designs. The only difference is the type of flower design used and the colour - Megumi's features the sakura and the colour pink. The back of the box is plain with plenty of text.

The sides of the box features the pretty illustration of the figure and the image of the figure itself.

The top flap of the box has a cute window in the shape of a sakura flower with more sakura motifs.

The background inside the box is a pretty pink colour with more sakura.

The packaging is very secure, especially the plastic shell holding the base.

THE BASE: 8/10
https://i.postimg.cc/yYVDT29g/Untitled.jpg

The base is large - almost comparable to Utaha's - which takes up a lot of display space. The design is also standard - there are three inlets for the kimono and metal pegs to fit into Megumi's clogs.

The sakura illustration across the base is pretty but I actually thought the colours for Megumi's base were not as striking as Eriri's or Utaha's, and came off a little plain. Eriri's lily green base is the best in my opinion, the colours match well and coordinate with the figure.

My base came with a little damage as it was preowned - there's a little scratch over the inlet on the left. It doesn't bother me much because I don't use the base when I display the figure and even if I do, the kimono covers that part so it is not visible.

THE SCULPT: 9/10
THE PAINT:8.5/10

https://i.postimg.cc/yYVDT29g/Untitled.jpg

This Megumi figure comes with no accessory, and can stand on her own. The sculpt for this figure is good - I am not very sure of the exact likeness to the character as I do not follow the Saekano series, but it is pretty faithful to the illustration. One tiny issue I have with the paint of the figure is that the colouring of her face and blush are so light that the figure is really pale (it still looks very good though, complimented with the pink of the kimono). Her expression seems forlorn for someone wearing such a beautiful exquisite kimono.

Her hair strands are sculpted well. The flower hair accessory is very pretty and detailed, and highlights the figure well. The pink dangling part of the hair accessory is soft and bendy - so do be careful touching those parts.

Megumi's kimono is made up of three detailed layers - an innermost red and then a pink kimono covered by a lighter-toned pink outer robe. The paint over the kimono is very beautifully done - the different shades of pink incorporated with blue and purple are pretty and striking to the eye despite the pastel shades used. Here, I would say that Megumi's kimono colour scheme is the best of the three (and probably why she is the priciest). The sculpt is good with the folds over the kimono, though the seam lines over the shoulder-arms are quite jarring.

The paint job is largely clean over most of the kimono, but there are small uneven bleeds over the yellow lines of the kimono skirt. I love that she has on traditional Japanese clogs.

The underside of her kimono is red, and there are three pegs over the outer edge of her kimono robes to fit into the base.

THE POSE: 9/10
https://i.postimg.cc/yYVDT29g/Untitled.jpg

Megumi's pose is elegant and ladylike, and showcases her kimono well. The pegs fit perfectly into the base without problem, and Megumi is very stable.

FINAL THOUGHTS
https://i.postimg.cc/yYVDT29g/Untitled.jpg

This Megumi figure is very pretty and eye-catching, and is currently one of the front figures in my display. I do not collect Saekano figures with exception to this Aniplex kimono three, but I'd say this is probably not the best Megumi figure out there - but regardless, her design is exquisite and dainty so if you are a fan, this figure is great to have if it's within the budget.

I really adore this kimono figure series by Aniplex, and actually prefer their size, colour and design more so than the Hanairogoromo kimono series by Stronger.
It's a shame too because Aniplex originally had a Rin and Saber for this line, but eventually developments for those two stalled - even though their respective Nendoroids were successfully released. I actually thought the Rin figure would turn out beautiful.

Personally, I consider Utaha the best figure of the three, followed very closely by this Megumi and finally Eriri. I have them all on a single display panel but am still getting some stuff to add to the display, so I'd probably add a photo in here once I am done. *EDIT PHOTO ADDED*

I would rate this Megumi figure a 9.0 out of 10.

PROS
- Pretty, eye-catching pastel colour scheme
- Good, accurate sculpt
- Stands without base (especially important for display given the hellish big base)
- Limited, Exclusive label (if you care about that particular label)

CONS
- Large base that takes up unnecessary space
- Tiny paint bleeds over the skirt (not very visible)
- May be pricey in aftermarket

CloudberryIl y a 8 mois#70376704After reading this and your reviews of Utaha and Eriri, you're definitely right about Utaha being the better one out of the three. I thought Kato's kimono is really cute but when compared to Utaha's Kimono with purple/gold color and the large flower prints — Utaha's kimono is soo much more elegant.
Still, kimono outfits isn't too common and I welcome it <3

Thanks for reading! :) Yes, for me Utaha's kimono is the best due to 1) being more elaborate with the gold obi 2) the extra umbrella accessory they gave her enhances her appearance very much.
I love kimono figures, they are gorgeous on display. I am still looking out for 1 or 2 more good ones.

galablueIl y a 8 mois#70365965i agree, utaha's kimono figure is definitely the best out of the three. especially when you think about how utaha has barely any figures compared to the other two girls (she always gets left out it feels like), utaha's kimono is a shining star. i agree with you on the face and feel like kato just has better figures than this, but i love kimono figures and it always feels great to have a full set.
Thanks for reading, and yes I am finally contented in having all three of the girls ;)
