Hey there fellow mfc-members!

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
With a rerelease coming up in a few months I thought it’d be a nice idea to take a look at a figure from my favorite anime. One of the protagonists and a genius tactician from the epic space opera Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu Yang Wen-li (aka Miracle Yang, The Magician or the hero of El Facil) ITEM #594139 brought to us by Kotobukiya as part of their ARTFX J line. I’ll be forever grateful to Koto for picking up the series and especially for using the “old” OVA design for the figures (the remake just doesn’t feel the same to me). I refrained from reviewing this figure as well as ITEM #594144 initially, because I had a silly notion back then that it wouldn’t be worthwhile without the bonus head (which I don't want). Well, some time has passed since then...
Anyway, this will be nice to set the mood for my annual rewatch so let’s get to the review now. 。^‿^。

Yang comes in a very compact and simple black window box. The huge window spans the front and sides. AS far as boxes go this is pretty barebones, most of the decor is just descriptions (names, scale, manufacturer etc.) and the emblem of the Free Planets Star Fleet Yang is serving in. A bunch of pictures of the figure adorn the back, but that’s basically it. Another thing I want to say about this is that the cardboard used is incredibly flimsy and prone to damages (which you can already see in my pictures). Well… ofc this is not exactly a series that lends itself to very artsy designs, but the box feels very cheap and carelessly made. A picture of the Hyperion or a sea of stars would’ve done wonders to improve it, heck even some anime artwork would’ve been better. -_-

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351715.jpeg
It does its job of protecting the figure, just like the blister, but well…

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
The base is a round black disc with the same Free Planets Star Fleet emblem on it we can also find on the box. Seeing how the figure is more on the simple side this is a good fit, but it also reminds me of the bases made for the EXQ figures with the rather high rims. I always found that a bit tacky looking, but in this case it’s actually necessary because the figure is screwed to the base.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351717.jpeg
Sheeesh, the box and base scores will make the overall score look rather bad. X3

Koto picked a very natural pose for Yang with him scratching his head.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
The combination with his droopy eyes and awkward smile looks really great and very much encapsulates the clumsy and inept part of his personality.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351724.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351725.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351726.jpeg

His blueish unruly hair has been recreated faithfully with ample shading. My only gripe would be the small bubbles/bits of excess plastic at the back of it.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351727.jpeg

The beret belonging to his military uniform looks good as well, the folds where Yang touches it aren’t too deep suggesting thicker fabric, while the paint adds an even more life-like appearance to it.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351728.jpeg

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
I both like and dislike how they handled his collar (though that goes for the whole uniform). Sure, the insignia, scarf and collar look good, but sculpt of the fabric could’ve been "deeper" (with more of a clear gap inside the collar for example). The seam at the back looks unclean though and you can find very tiny surface irregularities (similar to paint bubbles) almost everywhere on the uniform. Most people won’t notice these flaws since you’d need to look extremely closely, so this is of course very nitpicky of me.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351729.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351730.jpeg

Overall the paintjob looks great. I really like the shading and the sculpt enhances it. The button border and intended seams could’ve been made a bit crisper, especially on such a simple figure, but oh well…
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351731.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351732.jpeg

Funnily enough the seams/gaps on his shoulders seem huge, I’m guessing the jacket is made of leather or some other heavy fabric, but even considering that it’s too much.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351733.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351734.jpeg

The medal pinned to Yang’s chest suffers from the small bubbles as well but looks good otherwise.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351736.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351737.jpeg
I also really like the logo on his left sleeve, or I would… But I can’t stop laughing about the “Fiselrone Garrison Fleet” bit… pretty sure that’s not how Iserlohn is supposed to be written. X3

I’d like to say something nice about his hands, they gave him fingernails after all, but the seam lines and rough edges remind me of prize figures…
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351738.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351739.jpeg

Not too much to say about the pants as they’re pretty simple. Paint and creases look nice and realistic only the seam line at his butt being uneven seems… weird.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351740.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351741.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351742.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351743.jpeg

Yang’s shoes have a sufficiently shiny finish to look leathery. They crinkle in a nice way with shading enhancing the overall impression.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351744.jpeg

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Now onto a few size comparisons…
Since Yang’s height has never been specified (as far as I know at least) I can’t say if the 1/8 scale listing is perfectly accurate. Excluding the base, he reaches a height of 21,5-22cm (depending on whether you’re including the beret), which would equal a character height between 172 and 176 cm (seems fitting enough).
ITEM #317341 for example perfectly fits (size-wise) as well.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351745.jpeg

Of the 3 LoGH characters made by Koto Yang is the smallest and if I’m not mistaken that’s also the case in the series.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351746.jpeg

They do have some interesting takes on scales once in a while though, seeing how huge Kacchan ITEM #728445 looks in comparison.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/21/2351747.jpeg

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Yang is a perfect example of why I have mixed feelings about Koto from time to time. They pick up series no other manufacturer wants to touch and give you something you really love, for a good price to boot. But it doesn’t always look as if they exert enough care doing so (through the fan's eye anyway). I’m incredibly grateful for the LoGH figures, don’t get me wrong and this is still a great. I could very well live without the flaws though. Then again, even if I had known all this beforehand, I would’ve picked him up anyway. Beloved characters can almost feel like friends to you and if Yang can’t forsake a friend, how could I? Voir le spoilerCacher le spoilerhttps://abload.de/img/friendl6j9n.jpg

That's it for this review!
If you've got any thoughts on the figure feel free to share them in the comments.
Thanks for taking your time to read this! I hope you have a nice day and also happy holidays! :3

Those are some pretty heavy seamlines, even for a Kotobukiya piece! Especially that right arm makes it look like it should have been possible to swap out an alternative arm.

But ah, in the end, if it's a series you love and no other manufacturers will think about making a scale, Kotobukiya is there for you, and most of the times with prices below 12K. You just can't hate them, I feel like I will be forever in debt to Koto for making scales of the male YGO characters. :)

YangWen-LiIl y a 7 mois#72426758I can not more highly recommend the original OVAs, I'm one of the lucky ones that bought the expensive Sentai set they released a while back, but it is also available on HiDive for streaming. I so love the 80s and 90s OVA style. As you say, modern anime is a little too clean and sleek (I have yet to watch the new version, though I will). You can really appreciate the craftsmanship of the hand-painted anime cels (I own several), in addition to the classical music soundtrack, and the incredible voice actors. It's a true classic. It may seem daunting at first, but the amazing characters alone should win anyone over . Even people not into anime could get into it I think. So spread the word!Woah, I'm really envious now, I'd love to own the Sentai set as well and those cels are priceless treasures. At least I got myself the novels though. :3
I feel the new design makes the characters lose a lot of their charm and personality imo (they're like random bishonen a, b and c to me). The old designs were already attractive imo, in a different way and it just works so much better. Needless to say that I agree with your other points as well.
Though I'm pretty sure it's not me you wanted to tell that anyway. X3

ishidoroIl y a 7 mois#72426610oh wow. what a nice surprise. a logh figure review! thanks for making this figure review in detail! it was really difficult to tell with just limited pictures on mfc so i'm really grateful for this! as a logh fan i wish this figure's quality would be flawless but i'm getting it anyway bc i feel like this is the only best yang wen-li's scale we'll ever get. missed kotobukiya's first logh release, and i'm getting the re-release one so hopefully this time they will fix those minor flaws. wish they would consider re-releasing reinhard too.Thank you! :3
I'm glad I could be of help. Ofc a flawless figure would be great, but beggars can't be choosers and it's still a good figure. As a fellow fan I hope they fix their QC, but seeing how they didn't fix the skirt gap on ITEM #12 after 5(!) rereleases, I wouldn't get my hopes up tbh.
As for Reinhard... I'm sure he'll get a rerelease eventually because of Koto's track record. :3

broken-ToyboxIl y a 7 mois#72364351For all its drama the series can be charmingly funny at times and I love it. You know I have to say this, but if you don't mind the good ol' 80's/90's visuals I highly recommend watching the OVA. Ofc the fights look way better and polished (as do the characters) in the 2018 version, but the charm of the characters in particular gets a little lost in the clean and sleek new look.

galablueIl y a 7 mois#72363124I think you hit the nail on the head with the mention of a prize figure. When I first saw how flimsy the box was, I thought it was one step up from a prize figure. I kind of think this is exactly what this scale is ... I'm also grateful to Koto for making figures no one else would -- especially male ones. However, they were a little lazy with this figure with the seams and all the bubbles. Some of the painting is a little lazy also (but definitely not the shading).Well, with amazing prize figures in my collection that can boast at least similar quality what can I say other than that I think you have a point there. However, I love the series and the character to a point where I just can't care that much about it anymore (at least not past the point of the flaws being a small nuisance). It's like my head says one thing while my heart says something completely different. ヽ(゜~゜o)ノ

kojuuroIl y a 7 mois#72363038Wow a LOGH review! That was an unexpected surprise!
Our favourite functioning alcoholic looks great! I've been meaning to pick him up to join my Reinhard and Kircheis. Truthfully, of the three I think Yang looks the best, and the sculpt really captures his demeanour and personality very well!
I feel your pain with the flimsy boxes. The store I bought Kircheis from while reputable, had the box in really bad shape, which was a bit of a shame. In general I find Kotobukiya's packaging to be very... basic.
For me, I feel like Kotobukiya could do a bit better on the shading department for this line, but honestly I'm just glad to at least have a proper scale of these guys :)
I hope it was a pleasant one. :3
He sure does (I'd totally be down for a figure of him sitting cross-legged during one of the more challenging fights too though). It's a bit sad that the rerelease doesn't come with any of the preoder bonuses anymore though. Even if the bonus head isn't your thing amiami had a Free Planets Alliance flag if I remember correctly and I kind of regret not getting it back then.
They can do awesome packages like for ITEM #675822, but this? It's like they're meant to damaged in transit...
They could improve that as well, I'm okay with Yang's paint personally but normally they either way overdo it or don't apply enough shading. When all's said and done my heart isn't really into the complaints though, they're at the back of my mind, but just having LoGH figures still seems like a small miracle to me. :3

YangWen-LiIl y a 7 mois#72363036Thank you for your nice review of Yang! It's always nice to see that other LOGH fans are out there. Yang is my favorite character of all time, and I never thought he'd get a figure, so even with the minor imperfections, it's the centerpiece of my figure collection! I only wish they would do more characters, I would love to see a Schonkopf, Julian, etc.Thank you! :3
Well, it's become a bit hard to say so outright with LoGH apparently turning into the epitome of "elitism"... At that point I decided online dedicated anime/manga communities aren't something I want to further concern myself with.
I'm in the same boat, I can complain about the flaws all I want, but my heart isn't in it. Even the typo... it's just too funny, so whatever. x3
If I had one wish that'd be it as well and I think they'd be popular as well, so maybe... one day... :3

Yay, space drama. I love space/sci-fi series. I have not seen the original series but I watched the 2018 version.
As for the figure, I actually like the pants... Up until you flip him around >.<
I do like his carefree look and it's definitely the "darn, I guess I gotta do my duties" expression.
For all its drama the series can be charmingly funny at times and I love it.

Well, thankfully this is not one of the male figures that prompts you to displays it from that angle, so it could be worse (but still...).
And that fits him so well imo, they really did a great job on the face and pose. <3

SenbeiIl y a 7 mois#72363022Ahh what a great review! Yang's getting a rerelease and I really want him but that would mean I need to get Reinhard and Kircheis as well and their prices... ;__; One day...
Also I would love if they continued making more OVA LOGH figures like Julian, Attemborough, Poplan, Mittermayer and Reuenthal... heck even give me Oberstein haha
Thank you! :3
I was quite surprised by the prices when I was randomly browsing my owned figures one day (before Yangs rerelease) actually. I never expected that tbh, but it made me somehow really happy (not in a I've-got-a-rare-good kind of way, but because there's some love for the series and characters). Tbh I think both Reinhard and Kircheis will get a rerelease eventually, albeit w/o the bonuses.
Give me all of them, also Schönkopf... heck I'd propably even buy Bittenfeld. x3
