Collection Tastes: Changes from Beginning to CurrentCollection Tastes: Changes from Beginning to CurrentDiary

Hello everyone! Just wanted to quickly share my journey with collecting since it's been on my mind lately (and since my loot blog won't be finished anytime soon, I might as well post another blog XD). This is heavily inspired by CINNAMONFOX's question posted not too long ago and is basically my (very long) response to that. Link to her blog here!: BLOG #47054

My story
I started collecting pretty young, around 12/13. It's odd because I don't remember exactly what got me interested or even informed about figures, but all of a sudden I was obsessed with watching unboxings, reviews, and room tours of people with collections that made 12 y/o me want to spend everything I had in hand to fill my room with merchandise.

At that time I was absolutely determined to build an army of figmas because i found their accessories so appealing (and from my understanding they had a lot more accessories a few years back). I was on the lookout for the perfect character to start off my collection and religiously watched Mecha Gaikotsu's figma reviews whenever I got the chance. I was also interested in scales, but found that I wanted to collect mainly figmas with scales on the side... That was until I went to my first con and saw at a booth how small figmas actually were (apparently 12 y/o me can't tell from videos how small they actually were lol). I was super turned off by the size and ended up buying solely scales for a while, my first 2 being bootlegs and first authentic one being my beautiful Tony Luka (ITEM #72522) which I still adore to this day.

I remember wrinkling my nose at prize and trading figures too because I found the detail so mediocre compared to scales and not worth it. It's crazy how far prize figures have come since then. My first prize figure (ITEM #581660) was admittedly an impulse buy when I saw her in store, but when I opened her I was pleasantly surprised at how nice she was not only in detail but in size. She was so much bigger than my 1/8 Mikus and had a nice presence. I guess that experience opened my eyes to what prize figures could be if done properly- they've only gotten better since then and that Miku isn't even one of the best ones.

And nendoroids you ask? Well I bought Harvest Moon Len (ITEM #549380) in store and it all went downhill from there. Anyone who has a nendoroid should know how that goes XD

How about now?
My collection currently consists of 16 scales, 11 nendos, 10 prizes, and 18 trading figures. Even as I counted what I had, it's so surprising to see that what I had decided to mainly collect (scales) is close to the number of nendoroids that I didn't even see myself getting into. And 18 trading figures? Don't even get me started on that. Three words of explanation: Death Note Petites.

Figures that I thought were my grail figures I've sold and given away. A few years ago I would have never thought to sell Miku's DX Love is War ITEM #27602 or Aoba with his super unique pose/base ITEM #116883, or even the infamous Ultimate Madoka ITEM #98665 who I just sold recently. I even gave away Gary ITEM #485704, a figure that I shed actual tears over not getting, to a dear friend as a gift for teaching me and being an amazing person. I'm still in the process of purging my collection to the essentials.

Final Thoughts
I seem to think that my tastes don't change, but looking back, they've changed a lot. I'm still into series/characters that I liked back then (ex. VOCALOID, Madoka, etc.), but I've decided to dedicate my collection to my favourite series which is Death Note, and collect merchandise of specific characters from this and other series(mainly Kabuto Yakushi and Mello), and just overall series that bring me joy like Love Live has been doing recently haha. I'm sure this is true for everyone, but I just want to collect what makes me happy. I'm not really in it for the aesthetics anymore (which is part of the reason why I love the look of scales). Aesthetics are totally secondary for me now. Who cares if this trading figure of Tayuya is ugly as heck? It's Tayuya and I love her!

TL;DR
Voir le spoilerCacher le spoilerPast me: I LOVE FIGMAS!!!! I WANT A WHOLE ARMY OF THEM AND HAVE THEM PROTECT THESE EXTRAVAGANT SCALE FIGURES THAT I'M GOING TO BUY.

Present me: Scales are where it's at, nendos are pulling me to hell, prize figures are pretty sick... Oh, what's that? A trading figure is ugly as hell, looks like dogshit and literally the size of your thumbnail? Get it, it's Kabuto Yakushi. Also has never owned a single figma LOL.

Thank you for reading if you made it this far down, and let me if/how your tastes have changed from when you started your collecting journey!

SolarstormflareIl y a 7 jours#86975870Super interesting read! I also have never bought a figma but I'm seriously considering getting the upcoming thorfinn one because it's the only non gk vinland saga figure. I've moved more towards a certain aesthetic of purple, pink and aqua in my latest figures too, as before i just bought whatevet I could affordThank you so much! :D Just took a look at Thorfinn's page and wow he has such a cool design! I think he'll turn out great! Collecting by colour, that's really interesting and I've never thought about it before :o It's such a simple concept but I've been all over the place series wise with my collecting that it never really occurred to me haha. I bet buying via colour aesthetics would make a lovely display!

yakushiningIl y a 7 jours#86967240It is! I actually watched the first season maybe 4-5 years ago and wasn't too into it, but watching the second season made me fall in love with it (The Rin episode makes my heart cry of happiness), maybe because I watched the first season in dub which makes a lot of the dialogue super awkward XD. I feel like I'd still want to own a figma someday despite their joints and size, kind of just want the experience haha. Maybe I'll snag a Love Live one on AmiAmi pre owned just to see how they are! Nendoroids are too cute, it should be a crime haha. If they make any more Death Note ones (especially of Mello) I'll happily go broke XD
I’m so glad you gave LL another chance! I can imagine with the dub, like they’re talking in one language and then they start singing in another. XD And Rin is so precious omg, makes me sad that she’s one of the more unpopular girls because she has one of the best episodes and my personal favorite singing voice!

yakushiningIl y a 7 jours#86966926I do the same, absolutely cannot buy a figure without knowing of the origin and I have to like them as a character too. As for the difference between Figmas and Nendoroids, figmas are highly articulated and have accurate proportions, see here: ENTRY #23356. Nendoroids on the other hand are very chibi and simplified versions of characters. They are posable and come with accessories like figmas but they're definitely not proportion accurate and they have the same all around look no matter I what the character is: ENTRY #23355 thanks for explanation . Well I guess I will escape both types of this figure , figmas figure because articulated figures means more moving parts which lead to more parts to break down . And nendoroids I guess something wrong with figures . I guess I will stick with 1/7 or 1/6 scaled figures . Once again many thanks to you .

Wario54Il y a 7 jours#86909263Ooh nice to see you’re getting into Love Live! It’s such a sweet and wholesome franchise. :) I actually remember being surprised by the size of figmas when I first got into collecting too haha. I was still really impressed with all of the accessories and everything but I ended up selling/giving away the few I had since I realized they’re not really my thing. ^^; Nendoroids on the other hand...I didn’t initially understand the appeal but, like you, I fell down a very slippery slope once I got a few haha. lesser-robot-catIl y a 8 jours#86908732Nendoroids are like vampires - invite them into your house just once and you're powerless to fight them.
Even though their proportions are nothing like Figmas, I'd say with all the accessories nendos come with, your younger self would be impressed at the collection you've amassed.
Oh definitely. I argue that they’re more dangerous than scales- you buy more thinking you’re saving and then they multiply quickly XD

Aw, that made me really happy! It’s somehow nice to know that you’re at a point that your younger self strived for <3
