K-ON! - Nakano Azusa - 1/8 (ALTER)K-ON! - Nakano Azusa - 1/8 (ALTER)

After months of waiting and yet surprisingly no delay, Alter's newest K-ON! figure, Nakano Azusa, is out and in plentiful supply! As always with my reviews, clicking on a picture will bring you to it's Flickr page, where a higher resolution version of the image can be viewed.

In similar fashion to both Mio's and Yui's boxes, Alter went with a fairly straightforward, simple but effective box design. The box itself is attractive and offers a clear window from which to see little Azusa resting inside.

A quick look at Alter's Azusa reveals quite a good sculpting job. Although dressed in a fairly simple school uniform, the folds in her clothes and the detail in her hair and guitar are all well done. Similar to my review of Alter's Yui figure, there is little fault to be found in the sculpting job.

Wheeee!

The pose Alter decided to go with is a cute one, albiet a bit strange when looked at from certain angles. She is somewhat in between a sitting and a fetal position while clutching her guitar, and this can look a bit odd when looked at from the back left, but still not too bad. I really like the way they kind of made it look like she was hugging her guitar, I feel it really adds to the cuteness of this figure, and Azusa in general.

Like Yui and Mio before her, Azusa's beloved red Fender Mustang (Japanese 69' reissue?) is wonderfully recreated with meticulous detail. There are some minor things that were left out probably for purposes of practicality, but for the most part everything important is there. Following the trend the strings on her guitar are still made of clear plastic rather than a metallic material, but from normal viewing distances it doesn't detract anything from it at all. The paintjob overall is very well done and the details on the white pearloid pickguard is also well executed.

One of the things I was most pleased about with this figure was the paint job. After getting Yui with an eyelash and a ton of bumps in the paint, I was very happy to notice very few paint imperfections with Azusa. Sure there are still a few bumps here and there, but for the most part the paint job is much smoother than it was for Yui. Alter has done a good job with the painting of this figure, the shading is subtle and well done and works well with the curves of the sculpt. Overall, good job Alter on Azusa's paintjob!

Moving down to her base, the base itself carries on the theme set by Mio and Yui. The design printed on the base is fairly simple yet attractive and gives the base a bit more flair than it would otherwise have if left plain. One thing I was happy about is that the riser holding Azusa up is made of totally translucent plastic rather than the opaque plastic shown in some of the prototype pictures. This matches the base much better and helps take attention away from it's somewhat unusual shape. The base itself serves it's function well, Azusa rests firmly on the base with no signs of leaning ever being a problem.

Of course we can't have Azusa without her nekomimi! Attached with a couple of pegs and a friction fit, Azusa's bangs can be removed and replaced with a second set, complete with cat ears.

Really nice review. ^_^ And really nice photos. Incredible.

It's a shame that I didn't money at the time. And the pose didn't really strike me. It's too unnatural for me... Anyway, Alter usually deliver's an exceptional quality, so it deserves the grade. I hope that one day they put the girls in a pose that I think more enjoyable...

@Muntoe: They really did make her really cute ^^

@Chag: As for her bangs, now that you mention it the transition does look a bit odd. For the most part it only really looks odd when looked at from directly above or from behind/above. I think the lighting and angle kind of accent the transition a bit, but thinking about Azusa's hairstyle, I can't really see how I would want it sculpted any differently.

A similar straight line part seems to be common in other figures, notably Alter's Mio and also Tsumugi's prototype shots, so maybe this is something to consider when looking at Alter's K-ON! figures. I do agree with you though, it is something that kind of stands out in not the best of ways when focused on.

I initially hated Azu-nyan in the first season, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't warm up to the little scamp since then. Oh god, I want to be that guitar so badly.

Very nice photos and a great review, as always. One thing, though: what do you make of her detachable bangs? The transition between it and the rest of her head seems a little jarring in the photo -- is that mostly the lighting's fault?
