Trafalgar Law - Portrait Of Pirates "Sailing Again" - 1/8Trafalgar Law - Portrait Of Pirates "Sailing Again" - 1/8

Hello everyone, I'm back with another review! This time I'm going to be looking at a piece I've been anticipating for a little while. The freshly released Trafalgar Law 1/8 scale prepainted figure by Megahouse! In this presentation, Law is shown as he appears after the two year timeskip that occurs in the series. The timeskip happens just after the legendary battle of Marineford, where Portgas D. Ace and Whitebeard met their ends. (Along with countless pirates and marines). Law played an integral part in helping Luffy to successfully escape from Marineford, as well as saving his life along the way. He would then not be seen again until the events that take place on the island of Punk Hazard two years later (the place where Akainu and Aoikiji had their final battle). Here, Law has taken up residence in one of the laboratory facilities located on the island and is working with Ceaser Clown in order to infiltrate his inner circle and gain access to (and destroy) SAD the main component used in creating "Smile" (artificial devil fruit) that is of key importance to his plan.

During the timeskip, Law has also become one of the so called "Seven Warlords of the Sea" (a Shichibukiai), to add to his title of "The Surgeon of Death" or "The Dark Doctor". Law attained this title by delivering the hearts of 100 pirates to the World Government. As such, Law is now backed by the World Government, and the Marine Core. This now allows him to conduct himself pretty much however he likes. This is seen as a form of "selling out" so to speak by other pirates because he is basically working as an attack dog at the beck and call of the World Government. Law aims to defeat a Yonko (Kaido), part of the steps required to completing this plan involve forming an alliance with Luffy and his crew, destroying the SAD (artificial devil fruits) and capturing Caesar Clown to be used as a bargaining chip against Donquixote Doflamingo.

When we first see Law after the time-skip, he is donning a lengthy, stylish, black fur coat, jeans, stylish boots and his trademark white fluffy spotted hat. (The fur coat also features his yellow "Heart Pirates" Jolly Roger insignia to the lower left corner, with a trail of yellow spots going around the circumference of the coat near the hem) he also has this exact pattern embossed on his left sleeve albeit at a smaller size. His hat has also undergone a minor revision, now forming more of bowler/baseball cap hybrid instead of just a fluffy bowler hat (as seen in his previous appearance)
He now also has the letters "D E A T and H" tattooed on each finger (and thumb for the H) of both hands (previously it was just the left hand).

Law has also undergone a significant increase in power. His "room" ability has increased in size drastically (allowing him to pull of feats like cutting entire Marine Warships in half and suspending them in mid air). He also has a slew of other techniques in his arsenal as well. I must personally say that I really like Law, he's a cool character. However I digress, let's get on to the review!

The Box/Packaging: 10/10

I really like the box on this one. It's not too large and it the graphics on it are great. The theme of the box is divergent away from the "coins theme" found on the strawhat boxes and is instead reminiscent of the Neo DX box presentation style. The front of the box features a nice prominent graphic of Law's top half, with his name, and the line name in a small rectangular box to the right of the graphic. The window of that displays the figure is actually Law's Jolly Roger with the inside being the window and the outside resembling his symbol. I must also make a note that I love the colour scheme of the box, it's spot on. The Blue of the box goes very well with the yellow inside the box, you can tell Mega really cared about the box for this piece, I'm impressed with the level of detail on it.

HLJ packs their stuff snug, this could be a bit of a curse though especially since there's no bubble wrap or any sort of inner protection at all. Thus, if the shipment box gets damaged during transit, chances are the figure box will suffer damages as well. Luckily mine came just fine.

Left Side:
Moving on, the left side of the box features a few important things. First off a nice set of images of Law towards the bottom, a shot of him holding his sword from the front, a shot of him in an action pose with his hand outstretched (performing one of his signature attacks), and another shot of his back, while he's holding his sword. The letters "D E A T H" are in the middle of the set of images in the background. The significance of the letters here are in reference to his "word of mouth title" (The Surgeon of Death), also these letters are tattooed on both of his hands on each finger (and thumb) respectively. The window resembles the main window on the front (a hollowed out Jolly Roger). Towards the top of the window his official title is stated along with his name: "Seven Warlords of the Sea/Trafalgar Law", along with "Portrait of Pirates, Sailing Again"

The Back:
The Back of the box features a number of images of Law engaging in different actions with his "spotted" motif adorning the border. There are four images in total: a main coloured graphic features a full body shot of him to the right holding his sword. The biggest image in the middle features Law with his index finger upheld and smiling. The image to the top left features Law holding his sword, and the image to the bottom center features Law with his index and middle fingers outstretched engaging in one of his attacks. Basically the entire box is showcasing all of the basic posing options that Law comes with.

Right Side:
The right side of the box mirrors the left side (at least with the top half, stating his name, title and the series title) along with the letters "D E A T H" that are tattooed on his fingers (and also a part of his "word of mouth" title). Towards the bottom we get some more images of Law. These images showcase the three different facial expression he comes with: his trademark smile/smile, a grim/solemn face, and an open mouth. My personal favourite is the smirk/grin, as it is indicative of his mischievous side and makes it look like he's planning something or knows something only he himself can know. There is also a larger graphic to the left showing him from angle focused upwards where he is holding his sword with his arms crossed.

Top to bottom:
The top of the box features two nice prominent graphics of Law with his arms crossed and holding his sword. The left shows Law from the left side and is a bit darker, the image on the right shows Law from the right side and is highlighted in bright colour. Here, the window resembles the crosses that can be found on the scabbard of his sword, there are also four pluses/crosses in on the box, one in each corner. His name and the series' title are also featured as well. The bottom of the box is just a plain black slate with his name and the series title pictured near the top. All in all, the box is very nicely done with lots of graphics, colour, and relevance. I really like it.

Inner contents & Packaging:
The figure is packed very snugly within the box and doesn't waste too much space. The inner card of the box is a yellowish/orange and displays some nice graphics as an added touch. On the main panel you have his "Heart Pirates" Jolly Roger prominently displayed with the same graphic being mimicked for the bottom center card. On the left panel you have the cutout for the window of the box with a nice embroidered border. There is also a graphic of Law holding his sword with his name displayed in the background. To the adjacent panel you have the same image mirrored except the graphic features Law with his index finger raised engaged in his signature "tact" attack.

SCULPT: 8/10

Alright! On to the sculpt.
The sculpt on Law is very good. It LOOKS just like he popped out of the series and onto my shelf. I really like it, The face sculpt is of note since it's pretty much spot on. There's a strong emphasis on the darker circles under his eyes which is accurate to both the manga and anime. He doesn't lose points for sculpt there by any means, and the face looks great. His earrings are included, as well as his facial hair having grown out a bit more. His eyes are nice and piercing, a sort of icy shade of blue. His hat also looks proper and his body parts are not out of proportion. His overall design hasn't changed drastically since his last appearance 2 years ago, so his changes are minor at best. Law is a slender man to begin with and Mega keeps on point here. Probably the main point of concern with his sculpt that I've gleaned from other collectors (and that I agree with to a point) would be the fact that the coat is hugging him way too tightly. So tightly in fact, that you can see the very contours and creases of almost every part of his body, (particularly his posterior). Now, I for one am not paying attention to this side of him, and don't plan on displaying him facing backwards, so to me it's not an issue. It is a point of interest however to note that the jacket does indeed hug him very tightly. This can also be seen when observing him from the side. The coat should have some space between his body and the actual coat itself but instead seems to conform to his body at an almost skin-tight level which shouldn't be the case given the fact that this is a fur coat. Yes, it should hug him snugly... but not so snug that we can see the very definitions and contours of almost every part of his body. However, that minor flaw aside, the jacket is sculpted quite accurately and nicely, depicting Law in a stylish manner.

Law as depicted in the Anime/Manga:

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll65/solitaryj/LawAnimeManga_zpsccf9d16b.png

Here, you can see that the coat is indeed thin and hugs his body snugly, however there is a bit of a flare towards the bottom and clearly some space allowing for a bit of breathing room, whereas the figure makes the coat hug him quite tightly:

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Raithos1371158350.jpeg

Another point to note is the 'contortionist level' pose that he has going on. For some reason Megahouse sculptors love to have their males posed in back breaking, pelvic trusts. Most notably from the sides, you can see the angle to which he is leaning backwards is verging on painful. Again, this doesn't detract from the figure personally for me, but it's definitely a point of interest to note in discussion of the sculpt.

Sword Sculpt:
The sword is sculpted quite nicely. It's a basic design though so it's nothing to go into detail about. the sword is an extremely long 'Nodachi' Japanese style blade, with a straight edge. The sword is as tall as Law is, and requires that he carry it over his shoulder or in one hand. He uses the sword to amplify the range of his attacks, when his "room" is engaged. The sword can be used for fatally cutting/stabbing, but Law tends to use it in a non lethal manner. Choosing instead to slice up his enemies painlessly, and then rearrange their bodies into any number of twisted concoctions he can think of. (Hence where he garners his nickname(s): "The Dark Doctor" or "The Surgeon of Death"). The sword has a purple hilt with a bandage wrapped in the middle, a fluffy hilt guard and an extremely long blade. The scabbard is black with white pluses/crosses running up and down the entire length of it. In the P.O.P. version the scabbard has a slight greenish tint to it.

Law clocks in at 22cm, just under 23cm (his base is .5cm thick)

This means that his sword is almost 23cm tall! It's a BIG sword...

Overall, the sculpt is done quite nicely. If you can get over the jacket hugging him a little tightly he's truly a treat. All of his body parts (arms, hands, torso, face, hat, head, sword, scabbard) are all on point and sculpted very nicely. Even with the minor flaws(?), I really like it.

PAINT: 7/10

Onwards to the paint job! This section won't be as long as there is not a whole lot to say about the paint. The painting is on point to be honest. BUT there are a couple glaring flaws in the paint that I feel need to be addressed. The first is the inconsistency in paint on some of the fur coat's attachment parts, most notably on the arms. My figure actually has a problem with this, on the left arm. There's a heavy white paint that offsets itself from the black paint of the jacket. I feel like I understand what Mega was trying to do here, and that was to give Law's jacket a sort of "weathered" look (especially since he's shown in a winter-like environment). This works for the most part, but on some parts it's just blatant that too much white paint was used:

Voir le spoilerCacher le spoiler
In these photos here, (particularly the left arm) observe how the arm is clearly separated and defined from the rest of the coat. That is because the white shading on the arm is over the top. It should be flush with the rest of the jacket but it's not.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Raithos1371170399.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Raithos1371170395.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Raithos1371170401.jpeg

Another point of interest is the skin tone shading on the hands and face. Now, it's not as bad on the face, but on the hands it's quite noticeable. Towards the tips, edges, and ends the paint goes from a skin tone colour to an almost auburn shade. It almost looks like two different colours up close, which should not be the case. I would've preferred a more uniform paintjob for the skin tone. Again it's not a deal breaker in terms of buying the figure but it loses a few points here for the paint category.

Voir le spoilerCacher le spoiler
Here, you can see how the skin tone deviates from the more uniform tone to an auburn tone towards the ends and tips:

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Raithos1371158545.jpeg
Not super apparent on the faces, the shading actually works for him here...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Raithos1371169635.jpeg

Other than that, the paint is spot on. The jacket is a nice Black shade with streaks of gray here and there. The Yellow Heart Pirates symbol on his jacket is actually a deep golden yellow, almost verging on orange. Some would say this is inaccurate as it's supposed to be "just yellow" but I feel like it's fine. I will note it as a point of interest but again, not a deal breaker. I also really like the zipper, it's painted in a dull gold luster and it fits really well with the jacket. It almost looks like a real zipper!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Raithos1371158147.jpeg

The "spots" that are featured on his jeans are also present, they're a bit hard to notice at first but they're there. Also an interesting point to note is that the boots he wears are brown here. The boots are actually supposed to be black in colour, so this would be an error on the part of Megahouse. Again, not a deal-breaker for me but a point of interest.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Raithos1371158145.jpeg

Overall the paint isn't perfect. It's pretty good, but lacking in some spots, which can harm the figure overall. Keep an eye out when you get yours and you can see for yourself how the paint differs in the pieces. Based on what I've gleaned from other collectors, the problem is not specific to just one part. It can be on any arm parts or it can be on none. It differs. Luckily the white shading was only prominent on one of the pieces I had, so I lucked out there.

POSING: 8/10

There are a lot of options available on how to pose Law. He has 3 different sets of arms and a total of 9 hands. One of the most aggravating things I found though is the fact that Megahouse decided to include duplicate sets of hands for all of his poses on only one side! As you can see here he comes with 9 hands! Why Mega, Why? 2 pairs (meaning 4 separate hands) are the exact same. They're literally on the same side and everything (all right handed). This is beyond unnecessary in my opinion, I mean it could be useful if you were to lose one of the hands and needed a replacement... but I feel these could've been substituted for something of more significance. Aforce seems to have that covered though!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Raithos1371170391.jpeg
This is unnecessary!!!!!!! >:(

On to the various poses: Law has an arms folded pose, and then an interchangeability between the other four arms. This can allow him to hold his sword in each hand or his scabbard in each hand. And also over his shoulder with each hand. He also has a left arm that allows him to hold his sword/scabbard while also performing an attack with his right hand. You can literally pose him almost anyway way you want with his arms/hands!

A funny thing I found while messing around with Law is that he and Usopp have basically the same head sculpt. This allows for Law to actually wear Usopp's hat!:

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Raithos1371352159.jpeg

Overall, with the abundance of posing options, and the heart accessory being released by Aforce soon, Law is simply a figure you can't afford to pass up. GET THIS ONE!

BASE: 10/10

The base is a simple design, but it's executed very nicely. The base features the name "Trafalgar Law" and has the standard "P.O.P. Sailing Again" Logo in the middle. Also towards the bottom his official title affiliation is included: ("Seven Warlords of the Sea") this is a nice, relevant touch. Small details like this prove that the company is paying attention in the production of the figure. The base is in the shape of an octagon and is gun metal grey in colour. (In the photo it looks like it's also yellow, but it's not... that's just the artificial light adding colour). The base is simple, to the point and gets the job done.

Final Thoughts
And that, my friends is my One Piece: Portrait of Pirates "Sailing Again" Trafalgar Law review! I really hope you enjoyed reading it and viewing my pictures on it. If I had to say get this figure or not definitely get it. It's already sold out at most stores but I have no doubt in my mind he will get a re-release or maybe even two. The popularity and demand are definitely there and he's a cool character. If you're on the fence about him, just get him if you can. The flaws are there, but they're minor and I couldn't be more pleased with this figure. He LOOKS just like Law and I really like the accuracy!

We're almost there...

Chibi_Gohan (Il y a 5 ans) #1563042Nice review! Thank God you put a lot of those pictures in spoilers this time XD.
On an unrelated note SA Luffy just keeps getting uglier each time I see him. Honestly I think it's that particular pose though.

Thank you!
Yeah, I'm becoming bandwidth conscious, lol
And I agree, I despise SA Luffy with a passion. I seriously hate that POP it's disgusting

ymous (Il y a 5 ans) #1563075I can't wait to get him...I just need to decide if I want to put him with my warlords or my rookies. ;O; I don't have the first Law, so... Maybe I need to hunt him down so I can put him with both groups lmao
I know a lot of people aren't feeling the eye bags... MH was going for tired more than the eyeliner look Oda's got going on, I think.

He's so awesome. I don;t mind the eyebags as they are actually accurate, but people do feel there is a bit of over emphasis on them. He's still really good.
I'd display his pre-timeskip appearance (when you get it) with the rookies and the post with the warlords as a current update.

neo_valkyrie (Il y a 5 ans) #1563096His paint job on his coat where his shoulders are connected is a bit disappointing. It doesn't look all that noticeable in the other pictures so at least that's a plus. I would definitely get him if he gets re-released but I don't think he is worth the mark-up prices he is going for now. Great review.

Indeed, it's a bit of an annoyance up close but from afar, you can't even tell. Hopefully when you do get him it's not as noticeable. Yeah he's going for ridiculous upscale prices, so I would definitely wait for a re-release or try and find him for retail if you can. And thank you! :D

kingddd (Il y a 5 ans) #1563117was considering him but I didn't like the way they sculpt him too much. I'm waiting for Nami film z POP and franky right now.

I totally get that, his sculpt is definitely a "love it or hate it" type deal :P
Ohhh Nami Z, I'm waiting for Robin Z myself >.<

crosswithyou (Il y a 5 ans) #1563479Nice to see him out of the box! I got one too but it's still in its box because if I take it out then I can't stack boxes. XD I wish my room were larger.
I really want to open up all my Laws though... I got the first P.O.P and both Figuarts Zero figures too but everything is still in its box. >_<
He looks like such a hobo with Usopp's hat. XDDD

You're going to be so happy when you open them all! Don't overload from excitement, lol
Lmao! He's a good looking hobo though :P

EmeraldxDew (Il y a 5 ans) #1564883Although I'm jealous of how many figures One Piece gets, I can't hate Trafalgar. He's just too cool. :)

He's the LAW :P

Innamoramento (Il y a 5 ans) #1564989he looks good, but somehow i dislike his hands. i think they look somehow unreal, i've seen many figures from megahouse with better hands, which means realistic or more fitting to the anime/manga. hard to explain what i mean XD

Hmm I think I get what you mean. I personally felt his hands were way too big when I got him, once you put them on the figure it's not as bad, but I agree the hand sculpt could've used some work. Hell they could've included more of a variety in the hands too instead of multiples of the same damn hand!

ChibiZee (Il y a 5 ans) #1565796I really like law so i hope they decide to re-release him <:Y The review was great hope to see more reviews :3

I have no doubt he will get a re-release, all of the SA so far have gotten one, so I see no reason why Law wouldn't. He's super popular too, so for sure I can see that happening :P
Thank you very much, I try XD. More reviews are definitely on the way!

was considering him but I didn't like the way they sculpt him too much. I'm waiting for Nami film z POP and franky right now.

His paint job on his coat where his shoulders are connected is a bit disappointing. It doesn't look all that noticeable in the other pictures so at least that's a plus. I would definitely get him if he gets re-released but I don't think he is worth the mark-up prices he is going for now. Great review.

I can't wait to get him...I just need to decide if I want to put him with my warlords or my rookies. ;O; I don't have the first Law, so... Maybe I need to hunt him down so I can put him with both groups lmao

I know a lot of people aren't feeling the eye bags... MH was going for tired more than the eyeliner look Oda's got going on, I think.

Nice review! Thank God you put a lot of those pictures in spoilers this time XD.

On an unrelated note SA Luffy just keeps getting uglier each time I see him. Honestly I think it's that particular pose though.
